Having a yorkie's teeth cleaned What can you tell me about getting my yorkie teeth cleaned...she is 7 years old |
Someone who has done this will answer shortly. I just wanted to say that I'll be having Mandie's first dental (and 2 canines extracted on the 11th) so I'll be watching this thread. I do know that they have to be put under anesthesia and you need to get the pre-op bloodwork done. |
I had Pixie's done last fall and she was 6. I just make sure they do the pre anesthetic blood work. They also give mine antibiotics a few days before and after. She did fine. |
Your dog's teeth will be cleaned under general anesthesia so as Patti mentioned they usually run blood work in advance of the cleaning. Some vets run the blood work that day and some do it before. The dog is then placed under general anesthesia. The vet then examines the teeth and gums and checks for pocketing and any other signs of disease. If the vet has dental xray equipment, they will take xrays to see the tooth and bone below the gum line. Any diseased teeth will be removed and if needed stitches placed. The veterinary technician (usually) then cleans the teeth dental instruments and polishes them. The oral cavity is cleaned out. The dog is woken up and sent to recovery until alert enough to come home. Depending on the dog and the doctor and the procedure you may go home with antibiotics and pain meds. Your dog comes home with fresh breath and clean teeth. Good luck :) |
I'd listen to the vet's advice. Yorkies have notoriously bad teeth, and if you don't clean them they quite likely will lose them as they age. I've so far managed to stave off cleanings a little longer by brushing regularly with a pet toothpaste, but it hasn't eliminated the need for periodic cleaning. One of mine was able to wait until he was 6 years old before his first cleaning. The other just turned 4 and is just now looking like she needs one. That said, no need to panic. Dogs who lose a lot of their teeth can still eat and lead happy lives. |
I made an appointment today for Prissy to get her teeth cleaned on Friday. She is 5 and this will be her 2nd cleaning. Sadly I am not very consistent about brushing, but she is always chewing on toys so I think that I why her teeth are the best out of my 3 yorkies. I am going to start adding cocoanut oil to their diets though. I am also rubbing cocoanut oil on her teeth for the next few days (with a cloth) because her gums look a bit irritated. |
