New Puppy from Trena's Toys near DFW, TX
 

Hi, I've posted this question in the regional thread but noticed that thread is old, so I'm resubmitting it in the hopes that others will have info in this breeder. Thanks so much!
A few weeks ago, I visited Trena's kennel and placed a deposit on a male puppy of hers. The plan is to pick up the puppy next week (it will be old enough then). I was very impressed with the cleanliness and Trena's apparent wealth of knowledge. The mother appears very healthy and energetic; all the Yorkies I saw appeared energetic & actively playing, except for the sire, maybe he was just very tired then. The dogs were well groomed, and clean, with short cuts. All were quite happy!! The sire, a very tiny Yorkie (under 3 lbs.) had sparkely eyes and showed no sign of distress, but he didn't want to get up on his feet - I observed him being weighed. He did not appear to be hurting or in any distress, just didn't get up on his legs. Are there times when this breed just likes laying around, maybe like a bloodhound likes to do? I have been reading all the posts and books I can get my hands on and want to be as sure as I can that I get a healthy pup. Is anyone happy with the pups purchased from her? When a dog is "pet-quality", does that mean that the coats are not capable of being long?????? I am very early-retired (spine disease) and will have the time to attend to the needs of a longer coat. Do you think it will grow out ok? The puppy's parents are pictured on her website - Kim and Tatum. They are so adorable! If someone has the time, could you take a peek at the pics and tell me what you think of them? Does Tatum's legs look like what is referred to as a "red legged Yorkie"? Maybe this is just the quality of the pic. I didn't get a good look at the sire's leg color at the visit. Please do not misunderstand, I have nothing bad to say about this breeder!!! My first impression was very favorable! I am just very concerned because I have no experience with this breed (used to have weimaraners) - a big change for me. Trena seems very sincere. I'm just a worry-wart. Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks.

I'm from Texas and know of Trena's Toys outside of Fort Worth/Granbury if I recall ......As a matter of fact know a couple of people that purchased dogs from her. Well one and another backed out. The pup that was purchased I groomed and at a year of age had to work at getting her ears up....severe LP and though very cute, but a bit on the shy side. The other person backed out because the pup had ringworm.
Checked the Guarantee and will only offer a replacement put if the pup is found with a congenital defect within two years.

Will only cover parvo or coccidia for 72 hours.....mmmmm

Tatum is not a red leg.

Dogs are not AKC registered...but, UKC...

I just noticed in the other thread where you originally posted that FuFu Fashions on YT has a Yorkie from Trenas toys.

I noticed that the website says all her puppies are registered with the Universal Kennel Club - I have never heard of that one before.

Beat me to it Mary, on the UKC - I never heard of that registry before.

UKC was started for the Hunting and Field Dogs. Not as stringent as AKC, which is the purebred registry.

Like I stated I've had my hands on one of her dogs....cute, small and soft coated, with LP. The other pup as I stated had ring worm, this person wanted a pup from me but, I only hand boys and ended up with a girl from my mentor.

I haven't been to her site in a long time but, I do remember her dog's were on the small side and soft coated.

I thought she was in Grandbury, but she's in Weatherford not far from each other.

Yes this is Trenas Toys. She is in Weatherford. How can a puppy get ringworm I guess has to be from the mother? Would it be reasonable to ask her to include guaranteeing to be free of ringworm since puppy is slated to go to otherwise nonhuman, mammal-free home since pup can't contract it from new home environment? Anything else? Please feel free to be concrete with suggestions, I would appreciate that. Thanks. Feel so confident in my puppy behavior skills and so IGNORANT in my puppy purchasing skills! Soft coat?
 

Does the soft coat mean that achieving a somewhat long cut coat is impossible? Apologize for my ignorance here.

So this breeder is letting the puppy leave at 8 weeks? Most reputable breeders do not let puppies go until after 12 weeks. That is a red flag.

United Kennel Club is not to be confused with the Universal Kennel Club beamer's mom mentioned. United Kennel Club is a purebred club . They do not even allow the mixed breeds that AKC is now allowing. and yes it was started years and years ago for hunting and trial dogs. The standard is exactly the same as AKC in conformation and etc. The only difference is that the shows are more laid back as far as beinf more family oriented and no professional handlers allowed.

Again, this is the United Kennel Club not the same as Universal kennel Club.

Soft Coat?
 

Do, does having a soft coat mean that the fur is unlikely to be capable of attaining a long coat that the Yorkie breed is known for?

It will grow just fine and probably be very thick as well. But, a soft coat mats much, much easier and it will be a lot more work on your part if you want the coat to be long. It is easier for you (and the dog) to have a short cut if they are cotton coated.

I think Mardelin gave you a very BIG red:redflag:flag that should at the least caution you to research this Breeder more carefully. Would you rather ask questions of this Breeder, "why is the male not standing?"..."can I see you walk him?"..."do your breeding stock have now or ever been diagnosed with any congenital diseases (Luxating Patella's)?", etc...or just wonder why the male was not on his feet?

I would be very cautious in purchasing a dog without more information regarding her breeding stock. If not, be prepared to afford the vetting that could come from a dog with problems.
