Cut off age for breeding So I want to know is six years old to old to breed? There's a lady who says it's ok cause she's been bred before...and what age separates a adul from a senior yorkie? |
Is this a female or a male? Most breeders retire their females around age 5 or so. It depends on how many litters they've had and the overall health of the dog. For males, they can be used for stud up to the age of 10. If they are 10 or older, they will not be recognized by AKC unless the breeding was witnessed by a vet. |
yeah, 6 years old is too old to breed. at this point in her life it would be best to spay her and let her enjoy life. |
We normally retire our breeding females at 6 years old. If the female is healthy it should not be a problem for her to have one last litter. |

This isn't a question to answer the same for every broad bitch. 4 is the goal, depending on the health and only if she's bred successfully in the past. She should be spayed at 5 or sooner. |
5 is the average, but prior to 6 years of age. All is dependent on the female and the difficulty of the whelp and her health. At times only one litte is produced and spayed at 2. I've found that the older they are, the possibility of encountering difficulties encreases. |
I would not attempt a first breeding at 6 yrs...but would breed a healthy, seasoned bitch with no prior problems at the age of 6. You say she has been bred before...how many times and at what age? |
