We purchased our Yorkie 3 years ago from Pin Oak Kennels (Kelly Brown and Casey Brown-Harris) - I found her website to be informative and the letters from "happy" buyers; of course, she wouldn't post unhappy buyers. Anyway, I had recently lost my 14 year old Yorkie and bought with my heart and not my head. After numerous health issues, our Lexie was finally diagnosed with a congenital portosystemic shunt. I didn't know at the time I purchase her that I should be very aware of USDA Kennels and APRI registrations - please only buy from reputable breeders and avoid this breeder! :thumbdown

Yes you are right. I am so very sorry this happened to you, Bless your heart. I am glad you posted about this breeder so others will know. She owes you your money back you paid for her or another puppy! But I know it may be hard to get that. Still I would look into taking her to court.. There are laws in most staes to protect buyers from things like this. Hope you will look into it anyway. Will she be ok? I will pray for your baby...and you.....:(

Thanks for your well wishes. I really didn't want to post anything about this breeder until we had a definite diagnosis and once I did and found out there is every possibility that this condition is genetic, I felt i had to let people know. I didn't ask her for anything back, nor would I take another puppy from them - I just sent them a copy of the biopsy and other articles I had on liver shunts to, hopefully, make them aware and I also asked that they stop breeding Lexie's parents. I did notify APRI also, but don't think they will do anything. I never heard anything back from Pin Oak Kennels.

Lexie, at the moment, is doing quite well on Hills K/D and metronidazole, which is the recommended antibiotic for liver dogs. I have also just recently started her on Marin (vit E and Silybin and Zink). I will be so happy when she's back to her active ball fetching self!!

Yeesh! Just looked at her website and there sure are lots of red flags on it. Very poor health guarantee. Multiple breeds. Cross breeds. No pictures of her dams and sires...

I'm so sorry your little on is sick.

Yeah, talk about red flags all over the place - I just wasn't paying attention - just seeing those sweet little puppies' faces were all I saw; and yes, basically no health guarantee. But a big lesson learned. I just hope anyone that is interested in buying a Yorkie checks out YT first - there is so much to learn here. When we bought from them, at that time she was only breeding Yorkies and French Bulldogs, but now I see she's gone into "designer" breeding - Yikes! :mad:

I didn't know any of the warning signs of bad breeders until I found this site about a year ago either ( I lurked for a long time before joining). I'm betting that most people don't know what to look for- and once those sweet little faces get us, watch out! Unfortunately, that's what bad breeders count on:cry:

There is a sight called petshop puppies, it's a good place to start. I'm so sorry this has happened to you. It would be heartbreaking to watch something you love so much suffer

Are you having trouble with a puppy from Pin Oak Kennel in Monett, MO? As far as the "warning site" I used, it is here under breeder information.

Questionable breeder
 
In 2008 we purchased a male Yorkie from a pet store in Rhode Isalnd. He was bred from Pin Oak Kennel. He is very large for a Yorkie and has curly hair. He is registered as a full breed. I contacted Ms. Brown from Pin Oak via letter and email to her web site. We just wanted to know further details about our dog and his parents. He is so far healthy and we love him dearly. At no time did we express any misgivings about him. However, we never received a reply from this breeder. I do question weather he is indeed a full breed in which we paid "full price" from a pet store. At this point we would never give him up.....he is the most loveable dog. I just question how honest this breeder is and if the pet store is aware.

I haven't been on this website for a while, but recently saw your posting. I'm so glad to hear your yorkie is doing fine - I hope it stays that way. I let Casey know that our Yorkie has a liver shunt and that she should not be breeding these parents anymore, but I never heard anything from her (she's probably afraid I'm going to stir up trouble), but I did want her to be aware of it since my Yorkie's shunt is typical of incorrect genetic breeding. Anyway, we are still having issues, but we constantly monitor her blood level enzymes and hope for the best. She is now 4 years old, and like you, love her dearly. Good luck!

I guess I just supported some bad business. Eleanor came from a very nice house and I didnt think to question the breeders name on the registration form I was given. So far my little furbaby is alright, but I will refer to YT breeders for anyone looking for a breeder. love this sitr

I guess your baby was bred at Pin Oak Kennels in Monett, MO? I hope and pray that she contines to be well. We just went through liver shunt surgery at the University of MO with Lexie ($2,500!) and even though it is worth it, the breeders should know better than to be breeding dogs with health issues. We pay the money, but the puppies pay the ultimate price. Thanks for writing and keep in touch. YT is such a wonderful place to learn so much information; as you, I just wish I had known about it before I purchased a Yorkie; however, I couldnt' have done what we had to do without the information and friendship from so many people on here.

This is so sad, how is your baby doing after her surgery?

I agree that it is the puppies who are truly affected because of this, and Ms. Kelly Brown of Pin Oak is named as the breeder along with the sire and dam.

Our Lexie is doing quite well following surgery; however, we will not know if the surgery was truly successful for 6 months following the surgery. They put a cellophane band on the shunt which slowly closes it for a period of 6 months. We'll know how well the surgery was once we take more blood tests at that time - but at least we know we'vel done all we can for her. I wish you continued good health with your pup - hopefully not all her dogs were affected with this health issue. I, of course, let her know our problems and asked that she restrain from breeding Lexie's sire and dam, but never heard a thing from her. Good luck. Becca
