If there is a stillborn pup in a litter is there still a "runt" of the litter? Or would the stillborn have been the runt.

I know this might sound like a really dumb question, sorry for that. LOL

Runt means the smallest of the litter. Stillborn can be any size.

What if the stillborn was the smallest, would that one have been the runt, or would the smallest remaining be the runt? I think that is what she was asking.:)

Personally, I don't know what to tell you because I don't agree with the use of the term 'runt' as others do. I never thought of the 'runt' as being the smallest, but more like pup that may be developmentally behind the others and constantly struggling to try to keep up. You're smallest could be perfectly healthy and fine, but IMO to refer to them as the 'runt' automatically makes it sound like they are inferior to the others in the litter.:(

I took runt to mean the weakest of the litter which I would assume would usually be the smallest.

And yes, I did mean if the stillborn was the smallest

I agree the runt may not necessarily be the smallest. The smallest at birth can end up being the largest adult for that litter. I don't think that there is always a runt. If the litter is well bred than all should be close enough in size and strength that none stand out as being a runt. I can't say that I've ever had a runt though I have a one week old gal that is currently 3 oz. smaller than her brothers. She's just as strong as they are and will not let them push her off her teat. She's no runt.

Thats reassuring news to me. The biewer baby girl i'm waiting on is the smallest in the litter but there was one stillborn female and from the looks of the updated pic's and info on the website 1 of her brothers may have passed on. She is 4 weeks old tomorrow and as of today weighed 4.5oz (is that a good size?). She is the most beautiful girl in the world already and it's killing me to think of the long wait it is going to be before she is home LOL

i am in almost the same situation. I have a girl that is 7.9 oz and another one that is 1lb exactly. I had a tiny boy the same size as she is but has taken off and is now 11 oz. I actually had two "runts'. My little 7 oz gal pushes and stretches her little self out and nurses as hard as she can. She is not easy pushed off. she goes a day or so without gaining then will gain one tenth of an ounce andd i am so happy. I am going to have to hold on to her for a long time tho to make sure she has no issues.

OMG I cannot even imagine four weeks and that weight especially when I look at my little one that will be four weeks Friday and just a little over 7 ozs. she is the smallest I have ever had.

I am not a breeder, but 4.5 oz. is very very small for a 4-week-old pup. When my Jake was born, he was the only one in the litter and weighed 3.5 oz. at birth. Jackson was 5 oz. at birth. What did the puppy weigh when she was born, and has she been consistently gaining?

I don't know her birth weight or any weight up to this point, I can clearly see by the pictures of her each week that she has grown. I'm requesting weight updates along with her weekly pictures now.

I'm so worried now, I didn't realize that 4.5oz was exceptionally small for almost 4 weeks. I did just find out her birth weight was 1.8 oz and the breeder said she has been gaining slowly. :(

You have to give her credit for even keeping a 1.8 oz puppy alive. She must have fed her with a dropper as usually anything that small is too small to even latch on. I don't know...I think 4.5 oz at four weeks is just WAY too small. That is scary small in my book. 4.5 oz at birth sounds more the way I would like it. lol

I think I liked not knowing better then knowing that that is super tiny. I've now got a big ole knot in my throat. I assume this means that she really isn't out of the woods yet as far as living even. If she does continue to gain and lives would this be a good indicator of her health.. or could she still end up being a healthy pup? (is that kind of asking an unanswerable question?)

Tough question. At 4 weeks the puppy isn't out of the woods yet at that weight. IMHO Still succeptable (sp?) to all kinds of illness and possibly a threatened immune system--she has no reserves to fall back on.

Are you prepared to have a super-tiny dog that you will have to be super vigilant about--more likely to have falls, accidents, hypo-glycemic attacks, etc.--frequent vet trips. Some folks say tinies are no different, but I personally think they are scarry. Again just my opinion.

And I don't like "runt", "tea-cups" as descriptions either.

I believe my Lillie was 1.7oz when she was born, she is now 2.14 oz and she is rough and tough! She runs with the others and you wouldnt think she was so tiny! She is now a year and a half.
