Milk replacer Not sure if this is the right place to post or not, but i figured someone here might know. My friend just got a 6 wk old maltese/Lhasa/Shih Tzu pup from a rescue. The rescue was well intentioned, but they know nothing about small breed dogs. I told my friend about the pup needing to stay with the mom for at least 8 wks, and 12 is better. But the rescue adopted out the mom too this wknd. My friend said that she got some milk replacer. should she mix that in with his food or give it to him seperately, or does he need it at all. Any other advise you may have would be greatly appreciated. I know the pup should be with its mom longer, but at this point thats not possible. thanks! |
It would depend on how well he is eating on his own. Your friend probably needs to get some Nutracal and give the puppy some when he notices that it is not eating well. i give my yorkies just the tip of my finger. they make Puppy Nutracal also. sorry I'm not better help but without knowing how the baby is eating, it is hard to give advice. Most puppies are weaned almost by the time they are six weeks old. Does it have little teeth yet? The kibble needs to be moistened so it will be soft and easier to eat, then gradually take the moisture away. it could be softened with the milk replacer or water. |
Most pups are pretty much weaned by 6 weeks old. They stay with mom because she trains them in doggy manners, She can mix the milk replacer with puppy food if she wants to but as long as he's on a high quality puppy food and gets plenty of fresh water it shouldn't be necessary. If he's been nursing up to this point start with a soupy consistancy and gradually get thicker. I find that most of my babies just love the hard small bites while they're teething. |
I recommend Royal Canin Baby Dog 30 Weaning Food They find it really tasty (at least they seem to devour it compare to other brands I've noticed) and alot of times mine have gone straight to it from mom. |
