I have a question breeders. I really would like to breed someday and I have been wondering... How do you keep your males and females separate? Do you just separate when the females are in heat or do you do it year round just in case one would come in before you noticed? How do you keep your males under control during that time if you aren't breeding right then? I certainly don't want to ever have a mistake but it seems like you'd have to keep them separate until 6 years old and get them spayed/neutered. Is that true? |
I only have them separated when they are in heat. I spend hours of one on one time with mine each day and know when they are due to come in heat. If the playing and flirting starts, I separate them immediately because even tho you breed generally around the 9-11 day after bleeding starts, some will breed earlier. My girl that just had five babies, breeds on the 5-6 day. I have a girl in the crate now that is too young to breed at ten months old. She got playfyl for about a week then got really swollen. As soon as she got swollen, I put her in the crate and sure enough she was bleeding the next morning. I have two crate. I take turns with my girls and boys so they get equal crate time and no one is co nfined more than two hours at a time except at night. This is just how I do it and I'm sure others do it differently. |
I suggest keeping a file on each female. You should be able to predict when their season will soon be coming. I'd check everyday for swelling/and or bleeding when the time is near. |

Here's what I do :) I know my babies inside and out and anytime ANYTHING changes with them, I just know. I can tell when my female is coming into heat a week or more before she does. Of course I also have breeder software where I document everything as well. My male wears a belly band (although this is not for preventing un wanted pregnancies) He has full roam of the upper level ofthe house. The girls have full roam of the lower level. My male comes and visits and steals their toys and chewys everyday. When we are in heat, Brodie is only allowed to be around the female when they are breeding. We take seperate turns outside to potty and he doesn't get to visit. Its too stessful on him. So far this is working out perfect for me. Although I know I'm not perfect and know there is that chance that on day a opps could happen to me. I just take every precaution to make sure it doesn't happen :) Hope this helped! |
