It was an absolutely AWSOME experience....AWSOME! We have 4 little babies. The first one was born at 3:30 p.m., and the next at 5:00 p.m.. The Mommy was AWSOME.... The first pup, she was a bit nervous, and I helped open the sac, for her, she was in our Linen Closet, on the floor. She cut thru the cord, very quickly. She then got into her whelping box, and lied on her back/side and waited for me to bring her the puppy. She started licking him all over, and then allowed him to nurse. She helped him go potty too. Then it seemed like forever. 1 1/2 hrs later, she was still having contractions, lasting about 2 minutes, coming about every 10 minutes, and no puppy. I called the Vet, and they said, that it can go on like that for hours, as long as she was not in distress, and that she didn't have constant pushing/contractions for 35 to 40 minutes straight without producing a pup. That didn't happen, and the pup was delivered after about 2 hrs after the first. That pup was a Dry, Breech, Birth....no sac, and feet first. I helped get that one out, and the next came 30 seconds later....a MUCH smaller baby came....it slipped right out, in the whelping box, while she was nursing. The only thing, is I never actually saw the placenta. This baby was TINY, and the Mom started chewing at the cord, and helping to get the baby out, and in teh process, I am not sure if she ate the placenta....it happened SOOOO fast compared to the last pup, that I was hardly prepared, and was shocked when I saw the Black sack appearing so soon. Then I was waiting for the pup and placenta to come out, when the Mom started licking back there, and I realized she was chewing the cord, REALLY close to the baby. So I took the scissors and cut the cord, but the Placenta never came. I called the Vet, and they said she probably ate it, but I know how important it is to make sure you account for all the placentas. So since I can't really attest to seeing that one expelled, I need advice on whether you guys think I should take her to the Vet in the morning....so far, she isn't even wanting to leave her pups to go outside....she is being an awsome, Mommy, so I don't want to pull her from them unless ya'll think it is necessary....the Vet said they thought she was fine, and I should just watch her. Then about 5 minutes after, we had our 4th baby. I don't know how many girls/boys, cuz I didn't even pay attention to that, and I have been letting Mom rest with her babies....do you guys think I need to force Mom to go outside for a walk....she hasn't wanted to leave them at all.

Congrats on the puppys and what a great mommy. I wouldnt force her to go out to potty, she will go when she needs too. as for the other most breeders take them in the next morning for a shot, I have never took mine in but have always seen a sac for each pup. and they were boxers. I would just ask the vet what they thought.

Ahhhhh, this is wonderful..I love reading about the birthing of new babies...and unfortunately I'm unable to help. But did want to say CONGRATULATIONS to Grandma and the New Mom....

Thanks everyone! The E.R. Vet, said to watch her and if she shows any signs of being sick...bring her in.

The Regular Vet, said I can bring her in for a shot, but the assistant said, it might not be a good idea to separate Mommy from her babies, unless I see a reason, like she is acting sick....

So I am getting mixed thoughts about it, and I don't want to disrupt her bonding, but MOST OF ALL I WANT HER TO BE HEALTHY.....

So that is why I am not sure.

We did go in and hand feed the Mommy, and hold her water dish up, and she ate and drank...we also offered the Nutrical, and she ate that too.

Congratulations on the new babies and to your for doing such a great job assisting with the whelping. Sounds like you had done your homework and were well prepared for anything that could happen. I hope I do as well when my female has her litter in about 17 days or so. Don't forget to take and share lots of pictures!

I would probably take her in to get the shot to be on the safe side. Or if they let you, see if you can pick up the shot and give it to her yourself this way you won't have to move the mom and the babies.

If you don't take give her the shot, keep a close eye on her and check her temperature daily, they can go down very fast with a retained placenta or infection.

I know, I will. I don't think the doctor will give me the meds to give her. So it is a matter of forcing her aay from her pups, and I am just not sure. How often would you check her temp?

So far she is eating and drinking as normal, and having normal bowel movements. She barks when she wants to go out, we take her, and she jumps right back in with her babies. We hand feed her, and bring her water holding it in the box, and she ate 2 cups of food, and 2 dishes of water between last night and this morning. So I thought I would just watch that....but I have no problem taking her temp too. Anything over 102 is a temp....right? And how often?

I actually have to weigh them, it was such an exciting time, and the Mom didn't want me to disturb her with her pups, so I am going to weigh them today. We had a hard time even moving her to change the bedding...although we did....

I haven't even checked the sex of the pups yet. They are all constantly nursing....all four, so I am not to concerned, with their weight....we have the digital food scale, so later this morning we are going to change the bedding again, and weigh them all and document....I will also be sure to bring my camera, and post pictures and stats....

My vet sold me a bottle of oxytocin to give after they give birth to help expel any remaining placentas. Even after the shot they sometimes retain them. My last litter, I took her in because she retained 2. She never got an infection and did just fine, but I was glad that I took her in. If you palpate her stomach, you might be able to feel them. I originally thought I was feeling another puppy and it was the placentas.

Also, if you take her to the vet, take the puppies too. Don't separate them.
