Temp. of room for pups? Ok..we are all ready for Bridgets puppies (due 4th of July! :D ) and our fingers are crossed, but I am not sure what temp. the puppies room should be. I know no drafts or air conditioning....we have her nesting box ready, supplies on hand for whelping, vet on call and playpen for later. Ack...every time I have a litter I get SOO worried! It's been two years since the last one and I am just so overly worried! I'm driving my husband nuts with all my if this happens during the labor and I'm not here do this and that and this! LOL Thanks for your help! |
I can't remember the temp if you are using a heating pad, but with us, I closed off the vents, turned off the fans and shut the door of the kitchen. It stayed warm in there but I know that Gracie was hot. Maybe someone else can help you out more. |
We had ours at 80-83 it was too warm for mama so I put cool rags on her all the time, and shaved her hair real short (she isn't a show dog). No air. Now the room is 77.5 - 78.5(they are two weeks old friday) it is much better for mom, their area that they are in is protected from all drafts ect. we now have a couple of window ac's so it is fairly comfortable, but the rest of the house is cooler... 73-75. Good luck with the delivery.. do you know how many pups? mine went into labor a week early, I wasn't completely prepared (had to buy a hemostat) but knew she was in early labor because her temp dropped. also wanted to add that it was highly recomended to us that we keep the room warm and NOT to use heating pads or heating lamps... it worked out well for us that way, and we didn't use either. |

We had an ultrasound apt for a monday (the puppies were due on friday) but I had a feeling that we had better get an xray almost two weeks before they were due.. so I did, and i am glad I did, since she went into labor shortly after. Her puppies were born the friday before the ultrasound apt. It is pretty exciting to see the puppies on the xray- we knew that if she went until she was due, there was a huge chance at needed a c-section because you could see the skulls were getting close to being to big for her pelvis. Good luck :) keep us posted on her progress. |
ps- we were at the vet today, and he said I could turn down the temp again... so I am putting it down to 75 in their area. They are 2 weeks today. |
heat I do not heat the room any different then what makes us comfortable winter an summer. I use a heating pad under the box, not in it and that works best for my pups. The temp of the box bedding is what is important, not he room temp..but you do what is best for you. I have used the heating disc's you put in the microwave and they are wonderful. |
Well, Bridget had her x-ray today and I am very happy to report that she is expecting FOUR puppies! I am so suprised! This is her first litter and the vet stated that everything is going very well so far. It drives me crazy though because I had guessed three and my husband said four (he was also correct on our last female that had pups 2 years ago) - doesn't that drive you nuts???!!! Anyway we are so excited!! :D :D :D |
I use a heating pad under part of the whelping box, so there's a cooler spot for the momma and I also do something that will probably get a good laugh. During delivery I have scooped up firstborn pups after they nursed a bit when the momma starts straining/nesting to have the next one. The part that's probably a little weird(or a lot weird) is that I tuck them into my bra, so I have hands free to help the mom. Go ahead and laugh. But I worry about them getting trampled when she's focused on cleaning off the latest arrival. |
