I Need Help With Breeder/show Breeder Lingo!! I wanted to start a thread because i feel a little lost latley withh all the threads on breeding and showing and i feel there are others that may feel the same way i was hoping that the show breeders and more experianced breeders could help me out.... Could you please let me know what these words mean and also if you could start listing some commonly used words that us non breeding/showing peopple can learn so we don't feel so out of the loop? Thanks everyone!! My words i need answers for: 1. Cull/culled (does this mean kill/killed) 2.Gait 3.Lay back in shoulders 4. stop 5.angulation Please add to my list anyone anything else! |
I will start with one for you Cull I still think cull may mean kill but most of us breeders use the word cull to mean pick out the show puppies from the pet. I would like to think no one kills puppies any more but I would probably be wrong. Years ago breeders would kill white boxers, They would kill part of big litters so the others would grow strong, this probably still goes on In the yorkies they are all so important we do not have to worry about puppies being killed , I hope. Cull means to separate the good from the average or even poor. Or Show from Pet. I hope this has helped. |
Gait. It is the word used for the way a dog moves , We look at reach ( how the leg reaches in front) and drive ( how the legs push or extend out in the rear) and the movement coming and going. In the show ring we gait ( move) the dogs so the judges can watch the movement. |
Thank you very informative! Do you have any other commonly used terms that are used? |
Gait The pattern of footsteps at various rates of speed, each pattern distinguished by a particular rhythm and footfall. Angulation Angles created by bones meeting at their given joints Stop The step up from muzzle to back skull; indentation between the eyes where the nasal bones and cranium meet. Layback The angle of the shoulder blade as compared with the vertical plane viewed from the side. hope this helps |

Cull- To separate for the purpose of designating what the dog will be used for in future. Gait- The way that a dog walks, trots, or runs. Watched for purpose of evaluating balance and strength. Lay Back of Shoulder- The correct position of the shoulders on a dog which allows correct movement of front legs demonstrated in the amount of reach. Stop- The place where the muzzle meets the head. The indention between the eyes where the nasal bone and skull meet. The angle should be at 90 degrees. Angulation- The angles formed by the meeting of the bones at the shoulder, upper arm, stifle, and hock. |
