Is an X-Ray REALLY necessary.... Last time, my girl was preggo, we took her in for an X-Ray. The doctor said he "saw definitely 3, maybe 4, and possibly 5 pups." So we said OK, and took her home knowing that there were no more than 5 pups, but not really knowing how many were in there, I mean, thinking back, we kinda new it would be somewhere between 3 to 5, so it didn't really give us all that much info.... So she is preggo again, and we brought her in, at about 6 1/2 weeks along. We had the doctor do an X-Ray, and he said she is definitely pregnant, but he couldn't make out how many pups were in there, and suggested we give it another week, and come back for another X-Ray. He did point out to us the bones, but said, she possibly ate something that was blocking his view on the X-Ray, and next time, bring her in before she eats. Well, we are wondering if it is really necessary to bring her back for a 2nd set of X-Rays. Will it really give us information that we NEED, and is it safe for the puppies to be X-Rayed TWICE. Any advice is appreciated! Thanks! |
Doing x-rays (at around 56-60 days) will give you a better idea of how many pups are in there and vets can also take the diameter of the pup's head and your dog's pelvis to see if the pups can pass safely. I think that you did the x-rays too soon. JMO |

We never did xrays on my boxer when she was pregnant but with a Yorkie I would, Just to make sure that they are not to big for her to pass. One litter my Boxer had was an opps the Lab on the other side of the woods got in her kennel... well I wished I would of got an xray that time. she only had 2 pups and they was huge she lost one the first one was stuck and the bag busted and it came out feet first.. It would of lived if we would of got an xray and knew that they was to big and that she needed a c-section. |

Gracie's first litter...we had a sono done...around 40 something days if I remember correctly. Vet only saw 1 heart beat...she spit out 4! Last time I have a sono done. I much prefer x-rays. |
I'd wait a little while and do it again. I don't know if the xrays could harm the pups or not. |
We do an xray just to see how large the puppies are at that time and at the earliest at day 56. If one is too large at that time then we know we need to schedule a csection. You never know 100% though as things can still go wrong and a csestion will still be needed. I for one will for SURE do xrays - always. My vet said that an xray will not harm the puppies once the bones become calcified. We also did an ultrasound, but those are only done to verify pregnancy. A count is very hard. We looked like Halle is going to have three though! We did count three heartbeats. |
I have done x-rays and I haven't done them. If it is a first time whelper, then X-rays can be very beneficial. However, I also believe that they lead to some unnecessary c-sections. I've seen some x-rays where it looked like the puppy was darn near filling the entire body of the female. She whelped it with no complications. You just never know until she tries. I guess I always know that it's a possiblity that they can have a c-section so I watch for the warning signs when she is in labor. |

Sunnie has had 2 puppies every time. With only 2 in there we risk having one ot both being large. We get an xray around 58 -60 days so that I can compare it to her previous ones (looking at head size) If there's a teapot pup (6-8 oz +) in there I want to know about it. |
Thanks guys. I will be taking her in on Monday for her 2nd X-Ray, which should be day # 58. This is her 2nd litter, and she didn't have any problems the first time. She had 4 pups the last time, and she seems pretty big this time, so I would assume it would be the same or more pups. BUT as you all know we shouldn't just assume, so thanks to all your advice we will be taking her in for the X-Ray. I will update when we have more info. Thanks Again! |
I do an ultrasound around 35 days--to confirm pregnancy and get an idea of how many are there. We do X-rays on Day 59 to see if pelvis can move the puppies, how many to expect (sort of), and whether we need to schedule a C-section. |
