Vet unsure if pregnant?? Okay, so I'm pretty sure Diva is pregnant(at least I thought I was pretty sure). If she is, she would be about 5 weeks as of this weekend. She tied on 8-18 & 8-19 4 times(total), was very accepting and definitely in heat. The 1st couple of weeks after, she vomited, lost her appetite & was lazy. She has since gained back her appetite & seems to be okay. I have noticed her nipples a little swollen and tummy firmer. So I take her in today to have a wellness exam and check. Well, the Dr. 1st starts right below her rib cage and immediately proceeds to tell me she feels them....then she listens for her heartbeat, then she continues to go lower towards her private parts and says she feels something again:confused: . She asks me if she went to the bathroom b4 she came in and I said yes....she's thinking she may be feeling her bladder and states if it is her bladder, it's a nice size bladder(whatever that means)  . Anyway, she doesn't make a definite conclusion because I guess she's "unsure". Of course we could do an ultrasound but that's like $350-400 so I say, uh-no thanks...I'll wait. Xraying is a less expensive but we cannot do that until the puppies spines would have developed. So she wants us back in 2 weeks to check again!! Does this sound normal? Why would she immediately say she feels them then as she proceeds, thinks she's feeling a bladder even though she's in a total different area of Diva's abdomen??? I'm confused and would be disappointed if she's not pregnant but I'm still left wondering whether she is or not. At 5 weeks, shouldn't she be able to tell for sure if she palpated? Also, Diva was supposed to be getting her rabies shots today but we are waiting to confirm first. Is is safe to have her rabies shots if she's pregnant? Sorry so long. Thanks for reading. I figured I'd ask the yorkie experts!!!! Yolanda:aimeeyork Yorkie mom to: Diva and Foxxy |
If it's her first pregnancy it's not that uncommon for it to still be difficult to tell at this point. She has many of the signs of early pregnancy. You'll be able to tell soon as the pups spend the first 5 weeks developing and the last 4 weeks growing. I don't know if I would take her back to the vets in 2 weeks, you'll be able to tell yourself by than unless she's only carrying one. Xray should be done 10 - 7 days before she is due. In 2 weeks you should begin to be able to detect movement. |
Hang in there girl! I'm betting that she is...keep your eyes on that belly. We want to do this together; swapping belly pics, prego stories, and our whelping experiances. Wouldn't that be fun if they both whelped on the same day? Keeping my fingers crossed for you til I hear word positive! |
Don't give her any shots while pregnant...you will be able to tell soon, it drove me crazy with Lexie, but it sounds like she is to me...:) |

At the end of her 5th week, stand her on her hind legs. Her back to your chest. If she is puching at the bottom of her stomach toward the vulva.....pretty good sign she's pregnant. No rabies or any vaccines until after she weans the puppies.... |
Thanks for the info ladies!! I'll see what happens over the next couple of weeks & keep you posted! You guys are "the bomb"(as my 15 yr old son would say)....means the best, the greatest, awesome, etc., etc. I knew I could count on YT to put my mind at ease....at least for now. Yolanda |
Sometimes it is hard to palpate and feel what is in their is it stool , full stomach etc.. And they have to be careful checking as to not hurt something so really you cannot check to hard.I have checked my females and felt pups then to the vets and he can feel nothing,(I have always been right LOL) But like Mardelin said you should be able to see a pooch by 5 weeks if nothings else mamary development. |
pregnant Patience..we are only talking about 9 weeks, not 9 months..LOL |
I would call around...the ultrasound here was only $50. That's a HUGE difference!!! |
What about measuring her belly...wouldnt she grow around the belly every few days?? Dawn |
Seetr72...not a bad idea...what about it ladies. Has anyone tried just measuring around the belly? As long as it's not full bladder, bloatedness, etc., maybe I can tell that way. I'm not experienced in this so i dont' want to spend too much time putting pressure on her belly too many times... all in all, I'm being patient...what happens will happen. I'll check again in about 1 week or so. Wrenee4 -$50!!!!!!!! I wish. Maybe I should drive up to Michigan. :D :) ~Yolanda~ |
I weigh my gals as soon as they are bred and than once a week. Usually they loose a bit at first and than they will begin to gain at about 5 weeks. Teddi is due Oct. and she has already gained over a pound! She gained 3 oz. just yesterday. Looks like we may have a nice sized litter, we'll get our xray on the 8th. You'll know for sure soon. |
Diva has definitely gained. At the vet on Friday, she was 8 lbs....she's normally 6.5 to 7 lbs...I'm thinking closer to 7 when she got pg..Saturday 9/22, would put her at 35 days, start of 5th week. I will start really paying attention to belly swelling and movement now...I'll take some pics this week! Yolanda |
Tami - BTW, good luck with your mommy...I'll look forward to reading about your adventure/delivery day!!! Yolanda |
Thanks Yolanda, It is ever an adventure around here but I love it! I haven't even put my pups from last months litter in the nursery section yet. I'm a bit behind in my world but maybe it'll keep me young. Teddi's due just a couple days before your gal so who knows we may be whelping together! |
