Thinking about breeding Does anyone have any websites I can read that are about breeding? and the cost of genetic testing and vet bills and all that :) Also I know that a lot of breeders won't sell with full registration.. I know some do co-ownership how does that work? |
Just do a search for breeding at the top of the page and a TON of information will come up :) Welcome to YT :wavey: |
This is an awesome website: http://www.debbiejensen.com You can also find a lot of good info using the search option here on yt. I recently purchased "The Joy of Breeding Your Own Show Dog" by Ann Seranne and I know others have recommended it which is why I bought it. |
PS.... I got Zoe with a full registration in the hopes of possibly showing and maybe breeding. Not 100% sure if I want to get into breeding or showing. I'm still researching but I wanted to have that option open to me if I decided to. I got her from www.amazingyorkies.com and her dad is a champion. But there are a lot of others here on yt that have very nice quality dogs as well. By the way, I did walk away from some beautiful dogs locally because the breeder shows and wanted to co-own but I didn't want to commit to something I wasn't 100% sure of and also, her dogs were very expensive and I just wasn't comfortable with the contract and the co-ownership being that I wasn't really sure about showing or breeding for that matter. Good luck! :) |

http://www.lowchensaustralia.com/breeding.htm The above link is full of all kinds of help! Good Luck! Melanie |
I myself wouldn't want to co-own a dog, but that's just me. I understand the reasoning behind it, but want my baby all to myself. |
co-ownweship Most reputable show breeders will co-own and for good reasons. They dont want their hard work thrown under the bus by people that will indescriminantly breed the dog to anything and everything. And if the dog was placed in a home on full registration, most show breeders will want the dog to be shown. If it was sold for any other reasons, it would be on limited/spay/neuter only. Yes, some c0-ownerships do go bad. Thats why you have to do your homework before purchasing and entering into a co-ownership. Go to shows and meet people. While the showing of the yorkies is going on is not a good time. Wait until after they are done. Alot of show breeders seem very stand-offish at first. They want to be sure of your intentions before they just hand over a show prospect. Dont be impatient!!! The right dog is well worth the wait. It could take over a year for the right one to come along. Show breeders are not ogers. (although, I have met a few!!LOL) Just be honest with your intensions and a honest co-ownership will happen. My opinion is, if a breeder didn't have a co-ownership in their contract, I'd be pretty uncomfortable that they aren't concerned about their lines/puppies. I'd probably walk away. |

My Radar is co-owned by me and his breeder until he obtained his championship. I was forunate enough not to have alot of strings attached with my contract but now that my Radar is finished I get sole ownership of Radar. Radar's breeder knew I would do right by his lines because I have proved myself in the show ring. You have to build a repour with your breeder/mentor. Although Radar is the first dog I've had to co-own. I've been very lucky in the show world but when I take on something I take it on with passion and ethics.
