One Quick Questions :D Am new to the breeder community and my little girls is 4.8 pounds. I wanted to know how many puppies could she have at her size.. THANKS |
The question isn't how many puppies can she have but can she whelp safely. We don't usually breed gals that are under 5 pounds. Measure from her anus to her vulva, it should be 3 man's fingers. Measure from her pelvis bone to pelvis bone (in back), it should be 2 man's fingers. The size of the bitch doesn't always determine the size of the litter. I have a 5 3/4 pound female who just had 2 for her first litter. If the goal is not to make money, size of the litter shouldn't matter but the health of the dam and pups. |
I understand that. Thats why I asked. She has a vet visit coming up where they do alot of blood work to make sure she can have puppies and is healthy enough to do so. I never said it was about the money. I was just concerned because she is so tiny. I havent decided if I wanted to breed her. I was justing asking questions. |
She could have as many as 5 puppies. Maybe more, maybe less. You would be surprised at how many pups a yorkie can have. You are doing a good thing making sure all is ok and she will be big enough to welp before you breed her. |
The scary thing is to just have one, it seems they always grow too big. Making this decision to breed needs a lot of thought and consideration. Can you except the losses if they come. Can you afford a c-section if it is needed and can you be off work for up to 2 months if you need to hand raise the puppies??? I wish you the best, and good luck making your decision. Breeding dogs is a commitment, not taken lightly. It sounds like you love your little girl and I bet she loves you too. It is only you that can keep her safe and healthy. Best of Luck to you and your girl in what ever you decide. |
I hope all goes well for you at the vet. Keep us updated. |
i have a four and half poundd fgilr and a five pound girl. Sisters. they have each had five puppies in a litter. I had a seven pound bitch that only had one living and one dead puppy. |
  :) thanks guys for all yall help. Its a big jump to make. And Ill be so upset if I make the wrong one. I love her so much. Shes is like my right hand gurl. Where I go she goes. Shes so playful. But shes so tiny. Her mom was like 10 pounds so i thought she would be a lil bigger. Well she comes in heat next month. If the doctor says she fine to do and she gains at least .5 onces then I might consider it. Thanks guys Ill keep you updated. |
It wouldn't hurt to reasearch her background a bit , since her mom was a big girl , there is a possibility that she may throw a big one , and her being small .....it might be trouble along the way. Good Luck :) |

breeding small girl I would be very cncerned if her mom is 10 lbs. Do you know how much her sire weighed or the background behind the parents? What about the background of the stud you are going to breed her too? I never breed a female under 5 lbs. Worse case scenario is a litter of one. The pup will probable get too big to pass. These are the questions I always ask: Do I love my dog more than anything she can produce? Can I live with myself if she dies? Am I able to hand feed puppies 24/7 if she dies? Good luck with you and your vets decisions. Lynn |
