Puppies due ... temp question I have a friend who's yorkie is due in 7 days. She began charting her temp on Tuesday morning it was 98.2 ...... last night it was 98.9 and this morning it is at 98.1. Do you think there might be a problem, or is it possible that she just runs a low temp? She has tried a few thermometers and this appears to be an accurate reading. She is not showing any signs of distress and no visible signs of labor yet. I realize that the temp chart is not always accurate, but what about these low temps? |
I'm sure she's fine. The reason that we begin taking the temp regularly a week before the dog is due is to set a base line. Like people there is a normal temp. but it is an average, dogs differ according to activity etc. My gals have always run lower than the books say they should with a degree rise in the evening. A couple of days of taking temps will give you the norm for this bitch so that you can tell when it's not the norm. Good luck with your whelping! |
Thank you for your reply.:) The reason that I was concerned was because all my girls temps run around 101 and only fall that low when they are 12 -24 hours away from whelping. Since my friend had only begun to chart Mia's temp and was finding it consistently low.. we found ourselves concerned that she might deliver these puppies too early, as she is only at day 56 and this is her first litter. Not knowing that a temp this low could be considered normal for some dogs was a growing concern. Thank you again for your help. I find that I am learning something new with each and every whelping and no two are alike. </IMG> |
Each and every one is a new experience. No two of my labors were the same, I guess the dog world is pretty much the same. |
