Can you do this. I was told you can breed mother and son.. Is this true? But , never daughter and father! I am just asking I do not attend to do this.. |
You can breed mother to son, father to daughter, brother to sister (though NOT encouraged). It's called in-breeding. If you breed distant relatives, it's called line breeding. |
Also, in-breeding is how many breeders get their small/tiny lines. |

It isn't advisable to breed two such closely related dogs. Like TX said, it's called 'inbreeding.' When have you ever heard that discussed in a positive light? |

http://www.akc.org/about/faq.cfm?page=10#inbreed Why do you allow inbreeding and line breeding? The relationship between the Sire and Dam of the litter has no bearing on registration eligibility. Anyone who considers breeding their dog must consider temperament, health, and finding mates that complement each other. Breeding dogs that are closely related can fix certain characteristics, both desirable and undesirable. Therefore, we would expect that only very experienced breeders would consider inbreeding and line breeding. However, there is no rule that prohibits inbreeding and line breeding; this is left to the discretion of individual breeders. Inbreeding - The mating of two closely related dogs of the same breed. Line breeding - The practice of mating a dog to a member of an earlier generation of the dog's bloodline. |
Sounds like this is best left to the experienced breeder. |
You would have to know your lines extremely well for though inbreeding can bring out the best it can also bring out the worst. Unless you've dealt with that line for many, many years you can't know what that worst might be. I would agree, best left to those with tons of experience and know how who are willing to take the calculated risk. |
Not that I am well versed so much in the dog world, but it was explained like this to me by another very well known breeder & showman. In the wild the Dad, or Alpha male tends to kick sons from the wolf pack to continue his own lines... hence keeping his daughters to breed to. There for if using any kind of logic... Father to daughter would be most accepted vs Mother to son. Not the other way around. However I agree it really shouldn't be done except by the more knowledgable breeders. I personally would be fearful of carrying down a bad characteristic or gene. Tina :-) |
Breeders use inbreeding to find out faults and positive qualities of their dogs. This helps them to decide on what dogs to pair together to get the best quality dogs that will conform to the yorkie standard. |
