Anyone Heard/Used a Tracheal Wash to Cure Kennel Cough? Iam trying to do research on this and trying to see what other peoples insight is on this. My puppy died this morning and we feel it was due to the tracheal wash that they performed on him earlier this week. does anyone have any info on this procedure and if it should be done on a small puppy? |
If Bordetella was actually determined then the breeder should have been responsible if the puppy came to you with the cough then it came from the breeders environment. If your baby caught it or showed symptons only after you having her/him more than 10 days then I would think it was caught else where. The Bordetella infection could have weakened the Trachea. Bordetella is only a doggie flu it takes its course with a cough suppressant, and amoxicilin, usually will take care of it within 2-4 weeks. If he was just coughing they should have left him alone and let the drugs take its course. Now if there is cause to think he was also suffering with the beginnings of colapsed Trachea that wasnt detected, that should be considered. Bottom line Ive never heard of a puppy (let alone and adult dog) given a Tracheal Wash. What could have gone wrong is the wash could have further compromised the lungs causing fluid in the lungs or swelling of the trachea. I am sorry this happened to you, but these are the things that should be discussed and considered with your breeder and your vet. hope this helps |
Good post, Kim. BLYKMY, you can research that on line. If you are thinking of legal action maybe Kim (from CA) could handle the forms and stuff.. |
I wanted to add...the Pneumonia could have been caused by the trachea wash....because of fluid getting into the lungs ask Rini about this possibility. Ask for the file and I can take it to my vet and get another opinion. I think that vet has a responsibility here IMHO. It should have never been done with your babies age and only a week of treatment. There is another thing the breeder should had advised you to do the wash or not I WOULD HAVE SAID NO! only after 2-4 weeks would I have considered any alternative, after the drugs had run its course or there had been a turn for the worse. hope this helps |
