runt of litter very weak need help!!! Hey guys I need some advice, My runt of the litter is not gaining weight like the other 3. She tries to nurse from mommy but she is not getting anywhere. I have tried to bottle feed her and got her to drink a little but she wont drink much ! she will be 4 weeks tuesday. How do I get ehr to take the bottle, The other puppies are so far ahead of her in growing, I am afraid I might loose her. Is there a trick to making her take the bottle. I have tried to get her to nurse but she dont seem to suck hard enough. What can I do. |
I am bottle feeding all of mine for the most part. Only one of them will actually suck the bottle. I put the Esbilac in a baby bottle with a slow drip nipple and squeeze a tiny drop in their mouth. They will start sticking out their tongue to lap it or swallow it. Just continue to drop a tiny drop on their tongues and let them swallow it. That works better for me than a syringe which you could also try. With the syringe at least you can tell how much the little one has ate. |
I agree that sounds like a syringe would work better then the bottle,That way you would know how much she is getting. also have you checked the puppy for a cleft palet ? |
I forgot to say that as a last resort you should tube feed it. It is risky and I dont like doing it but I tubed my little 2 oz guy for a couple days just to get his strength up and he took off after that. |
If I ever have a slow pup, I will feed with a syringe. Good luck! |
Great advice from all the above posts!!! I recommend the syringe more then bottle personally. Definately have the pup checked for a cleft palet. I wish you the best!!! |
pup At her age you can let her lap from a spoon or your finger..make a mixed of goats milk and baby food meat.. I have done this at 3 weeks and they eat well...a mess, but a lot gets in them..and they can have Nutra Drops or Nurta Cal.. |
Several members have mentioned checking for a cleft palet. I had a pup die because I didn't know to check for it. The cleft palet will keep a puppy from nursing. One thing that can indicate a cleft palet, is milk coming out their sweet little nose when you feed them. Wishing you the best with your little one! |
I hope all goes well for you. You've gotten a lot of good advice. |
lapping from jar lid When I had litters all mine could lap from a jar lid or ash tray by the time they were 3 weeks. Put a little on her mouth and let her lick it off and teach her to lap it up. Sometimes mixing some rice cereal to thicken it helps |
