Worrisome question, please answer. I have 2 females that tied, one on 7/14 and the other on 7/15. I did not check for bleeding, really, I saw no blood. The first female didn't breed again until 7/21 and then my male went mad. The 2nd female didn't breed again until 7/17. This male went mad too. So what I would like to know is should I worry about the first time they each bred or do you think it was too early for ovulation? Sylvia |
i thought you went by the first breeding but at the vets office I work at they say from the LAST CONTACT> |

I have never heard that before. Wonder if it is a new way of thinking or what. Hope we get some more answers. I have it marked from both dates on my calendar but it would be a lot easier if there is someone with experience who has had this happen. I hate to have to sit at home for 2 weeks waiting for these girls to have their babies. LOL Sylvia |
well when they get to a certain point it will be easier to tell when they are going to whelp. Also taking temps is usually a good way of planning. |
what days did you do the breeding on? 9th-15th? did you count 10 days from the first time you saw the bleeding? we need a little more information to be able to help you with determining the dates. |
i just went back and reread. there was no bleeding? hummmm...not at all? |

I would go by the first date so you are ready and not caught off guard . Most of the time you'll know when she is close. Other times if you end up sitting at home playing the waiting game.:) |
I'm not really sure, but I'd go by the first date. This way you're prepared. |
I would go by the first date...and see where it goes... |
most breeders go by the 2nd tie but since i don't know what day she went into heat, it could be anyone's guess. sometimes dogs tie when they are not in heat. could this be the case? normally the tie is done on day 9, 11 or 10,12. if she would come back on, we can get more information and make a better educated guess. also...just a note, females ovulate at different times, hince the days you should mate them. the sperm can live up to 72 hrs so depending on the day she ovulated, it could be 72 hrs later that it took. so one of those ties will not take b/c they cannot conceive between that long of a span. |
Fresh sperm can live 5-7 days. Most breeders that I know go by the first tie. |
I hate to sound stupid, but I'm new to YT, but I am confused. Her males went mad?? I'm confused, What does that mean? Am I missing some education on terminology? Just curious. Thanks, Laura |

breeding I would go by the first breeding always...then there are no surprises.. As to her males going mad..it just means they were acting EXTREMELY interested in the making sure no bitch goes unbred... |

Sorry all, real life interfers. LOL No, I saw no bleeding, not at first nor at the 2nd tie. The boys were "mad" with desire. The first time they tied the boys were very excited so I thot it was time. But after the first time for each of them they lost interest. I think it was just the excitement getting to them. I think the 2nd time they tied with the girls the timing was better and I know they can tie before the female ovulates. What worries me is that a few months ago I lost a female and her babies when the babies came too early. That female did not tie a week early tho. I think I am safe going with the 2nd ties but like everyone advises I will watch from the due date of the first tie. Sylvia |

To be totally honest I don't know how to determine when they actually come in heat. If I keep a really close check on them then I notice the smallest swelling start about 2-3 weeks before the full swelling happens. So when do I start counting the days? When do I determine the actual count of 7 days coming in, 7 days in, and 7 days going out? I have had them tie 2 weeks after I thot the girls had gone out of heat. Bet you can guess that was a surprise? If I count 9 days after the bleeding starts, how can I be sure that the bleeding started that first day of the 9? I know to check with a tissue. Sylvia |

Laura, there is nothing in the world like watching a male when there is a female in full blown heat. They can't see anything but the female. They can't hear anything but the female. It drives me crazy when they act like that. I can't get the boys attention at all. I might as well not exist. LOL Even when I pick them up to move them, they don't seem to know it's me or even to know a human has picked them up. Sylvia |

Another is called "split heats" where dogs goes into a heat cycle but don't ovulate but then go into a fertile heat period weeks later. This makes it difficult to determine the correct breeding dates. This is where progesterone testing becomes important. The first significant, sustained rise in progesterone usually coincides with the "LH Surge". This is important because ovulation occurs about 48 hours after the LH surge. |
all i can say is good luck. i think that would drive me crazy not knowing. mine have always bled. as far as ck'g, when i know it is getting close to the time, i ck them at least 10 times a day until i see the first spot of blood. sometimes it is just a smear on the vagina that i catch b/4 they clean themselves. keep us posted |
I have noticed that other females tend to pick up on a bitch going into heat before the males do. When it's getting close around the time they are due in to heat .. I watch and notice when one of the girls is smelling around on another.. I then start watching for swelling, I'll take toliet paper and wipe the area, went I see blood ..I start the count. I'll breed on the 9th 11th and 13th. and I go by the first tie. |

Hi everyone. My 3 1/2 month old male knew when my Lucy was going into heat about 3 days before she started to swell; she would walk by and he would raise his nose in the air and sniff, as if he were saying "whats that wonderful aroma". It was funny!! I was surprised he noticed so young! So actually, I knew to start watching. I had her bred 3 weeks ago to a very nice male and am hopefully expecting puppies around the 12th of October! I am so excited!! Laura |

It has been several years, but I bred a few littlers of dachunds (minis). This will be my first litter of yorkies, but I am fortunate to have a couple of really good mentors close by that have bred yorkies so I have wonderful help and advise. My little male is a bit over 4 1/2 months now. He wasn't old enough, needless to say, so I paid for a stud from one of my mentors. I am so excited, he is the son of Dot's Special Spark of TLC , so I really think I will have some nice puppies. It is appearing quite favorably that Lucy is expecting, so I guess the wait is on! Theres nothing like watching a stud do a 180 degree personality change when a bitch in heat comes into the room...Yogi is such a passive, laid back little guy and when a gal in season enters the room, his tongue goes back in his mouth, those ears go up, his heart rate doubles, he's all business and there is NO stopping him..he vomits and is absolutey "strung out" for hours after....urg..the joys of owning a stud... |
I noticed My Minnie coming into heat July 3-4 and Mickey tried to get her a few times thro those next two weeks. And she was waving.I took a swab and there was blood, shes a light bleeder. Now here it is August and last night and today My little boy is very interested in her again, he keeps trying to ride her and she is swollen again and once again theres light blood. She must be having a split heat. She was also very sick at her tummy a few days ago. |
