Not drinking water??? Hello, As some of you know Tinkerbell had her 3 boys on Sunday and they seem to be doing great, I took them to the vet on Monday and he said Tinkerbell and her puppies looked good. We got the tails and dew claws done. While I was there I noticed one of her lower breast is swollen and he said it was just milk but it wasn't infected, he suggested I try to put the babies there more often to nurse. I was feeding her favorite, chicken and brown rice, yesterday she ate and egg and some more chicken, but no water, She is not interested in food now:eek: :( I dont know what to do, I mean she is starting to look like she is losing weigh:( I gave her some water yesterday with a syringe and she was drinking it but not too much:eek: It freaks me out because the babies nurse constantly:eek: her bottom breast are still full with milk but I dont know about the rest. Also she had diarriah:eek: is that normal, it is very liquidy not hard at all:( Should I call my vet or wait?? |
if you are concerned, i would call the vet. as far as the lower nipples being full, place the babies there to nurse. as far as the water goes, i would keep putting the syringe in her mouth. mine had loose stools for about a week after whelping due to she ate all of the placentas. keep trying with the food. give her a little at a time. i would put a little bit of bacon or hamberger grease on the food and mine would gooble it up. some people would not reccomend this but it worked for me. i hope everything goes better for you. whelping is always scary. |

My one mom was doing the same thing so I would mix her a bowl with the goats milk, water, egg yolk, and karo syrup. She would drink that and at least I knew she was getting some water and the protein and sugar. I tried alot of things and the one thing she would eat was braunschweiger or I guess they call it liverwurst. In the lunch meat section. She loved it. She is now eating well and back up to weight. It took a few weeks though to get her back eating and drinking good. Blessings to you and your new babes and mom. Hope she does well. |
sick mommy One of my girls did the same thing after she whelped. I ended up taking her in and the vet said she just got too much of the after birth, gave her a shot and she was eating and drinking by the end of the day. He said sometimes they just get too much of it. |
if you are concerned I would take her in better safe than sorry and when our babies dont weigh that much it doesnt take them long to become dehydrated. |
Mardelin's Whelping Pudding Here is Mardelins Recipes for Whelping Pudding I give it to my girls when whelping & while nursing. Mardelin's Whelping Pudding Recipes Post Whelping Pudding 16 oz. water 1 pkg. Knox Gelatin (micro. to disolve) 15 oz. can evap. milk 2 tabls. vanilla yogurt 2 egg yolks 2 tabls. white corn syrup mix all ingred. in bowl let set in fridge until thickens. Spoon out as needed. Here's another to give to mom immediately after whelping 1 can of goats milk equal parts of water 1 egg yolk 1 table spoon of Karo syrup. Helps to get her strength back. Place a bowl right up to her and she'll lap it right up. Both of the recipes help with milk production. |
Bailey is doing the same thing and wont eat or drink water either. She will drink Esbilac but only if I syringe it in her. She wont drink it out of the bowl. I am at my wits end with what to feed her. What she will eat one minute she will turn her nose up at the next???? Try the Esbilac out of a syringe. It has more nutrients in it than just regular goats milk. |
