Whelping box??? Is a whelping box really necessary?? or can I just have blanket for her to have her babies?? This is my first time:confused: Please help, also I need to go shopping for the basics, what would that include?? scizzors?? Help please:D |
yes its necessary to confine the puppies and the momma. A little plastic pool (hard plastic) works. a bigger crate. a box a place where she can go in and out but its dark and quiet and the puppies cannot get hurt or caught in anything |

I believe that you need to be able to confine the mother with the puppies. a swimming pool is ok but mom can get out of it and might decide to move the puppies. I used a 4x4 xpen, with the bottom half of a travel crate for a whelping box. Once the whelping was finished, I moved mom and babies to a bed with deep sides. I used clothespins to attach a hand towel over half of the bed, to help hold the heat in, and put a heating pad, set on low, under that half, for the babies to go to when Mom wasn't there. The other half was for Mom to lay so she would not have to be on the heating pad. the moms get very warm. I also put another bed in the x pen for mom so she could get away from the puppies if she wanted to. During whelping I got into the pen with her and sat on a pillow, I had all of my supplies in a laundry basket in the pen also. When the puppies became mobile, I divided the x pen into three parts, using 1x12 boards. one area was for sleeping, another was for pottying, and the third I kept closed off until the puppies were big enough to play, and when they had already become proficient with the potty area. Mom could jump over the boards, but the puppies need to use the door ways. I can take a picture of my set up if you'd like. |

Thank You ladies for all the info, pics would be excellent :D  |
Whelping Box I, too, am new at this and just made my first whelping bpox. I used a heavy cardboard box that my new Kohler sink came in. I made a base out out 2X4's so the pups would gravitate to the middle, causing it to sag, so they would not go behind the mama and get smothered (this eleviates the need for the rail around the sides (so the books told me). I cut an opening in the front so the Mama could get in and out, but high enough that the pups couldn't. Also made a divider so she could have space when she wanted to have reat from them. I put a bathroom rug with rubber backing in the bottom and when it is time for her to have the pups, I will line it with newspapers. Also, just read that washable foam-rubber circular cushions with high sides padded with polyester fibre are also good to use. Cover the ring with a clean receiving blankets or disposable diapers to absorb the fetal fluids. After they are all born, Mom and babies can rest in there. Supplies: Go to www.bonchien.com/whelpingchecklist for a comprehensive list of supplies you will need (and more importly, what they are for :) ). We are due this week and are having five puppies! Good luck! Lynn :Puppy2: :Puppy2: :Puppy2: :Puppy2: :Puppy2: |
mine is really simple. i have an x-pen at the foot of my bed. in one end, I have a whelpng box that is only a rubbermaid clear under the bed storage box. i put what is called a "pish pad' in that. it is an absorbent peice of mat like stuff. no blankets, no towels or stuff like that. too easy for the puppies to get lost in. When the puppies get big enough to climb over the side of the whelping box, it is removed and they have the x-pen to roam around in. I keep the food and water in one end of it for mama and a pee pad in one corner. when the puppies start roaming around, I start taking mama out for a few minutes at a time. |
