Emergency !!! New Puppies!! I Need Your Help! Suki Just Had Her Puppies, 4 Beautiful Babies, They Seem A Little Cold To Me, I Have Put Down The Heating Pad, Mom Is With Them And They Seem To Be Nursing. All 4 Seem About The Same Weight, I Havent Weighed Them Yet.! I Need To Know How Soon Can She Eat, She Seems To Be Panting Very Hard. I Have Given Her A Bowl Of Esbilac And She Drank It Without Stopping. I Am Making The Whelping Pudding Right Now ! Please Help Can I Feed Her And What Is The Best Thing To Do To Get The Puppies Warmer ????? I Know The 1st Week Is Critical So Please Give Me Your Help, What Can I Do To Make Sure Everything Is Fine. |
my suggestion is to place a lamp over them. i have to go so i don't have time to give you all my suggestions but this i would do. i never use heating pads b/c they only warm one side of their bodies. the lamp will warm the blanket and them. if you don't have a heating lamp, use a regular table lamp. i hope more people come on to help you more. good luck and congrats |
You can feed her anytime she is hungry. Panting is very normal the first little while. Don't worry about it. For the puppies the heating pad is good make sure it is on low and not where it can burn them. Under a part of the whelping box is good. Be sure the pups and/or the mom have a place to get away from it if they get too hot. Make sure they are out of drafts. You may want to cover the box partially so it's not drafty. I also closed the AC vent to that room for the first couple of weeks. Good luck with the new ones! This is an exciting time! Congratulations! |
pups We all have opinions..I find a warming pad under the box works best. Lamps tend to dehyrate pups I found..it warms the entire bed and that can be stressful for the dam..you want the area warm and not so bright like they are under a spot light...I put a sheet around the pen so mom is private and quiet..best wishes |
we all know that i am not a breeder but after Ahia had her babies she would pant and I gave her some cottage cheese which helped. I think she had a deficiency in calcium. (or something). |
Definitely feed mom, calcium at this time is good. Mothers pudding is great or her reg. food and cottage cheese, egge, tums. Right now, be sure you're puppies are warm, make sure there are no drafts ie, ceiling fans, air conditioning on too low. You could also put a little (thin) receiving blanket over them as they nurse or lay. This is if you're watching them carefully. Watch for them to get too warm, they'll start spreading apart. |
She could be panting because the bed is too warm for her. Some moms will try to move pups if they're too hot (moms). Heating pad UNDER the whelping box and a towel or baby blanket in the box is what we do but not too many layers...pups can get caught up in excess stuff. I keep mom and pups in an x-pen and tie a sheet over the top that extends down the sides. She seems to like it just fine and it gives her privacy...like a den. If you have ceiling fans in the room, I'd turn them off and close air vents to that room. I wouldn't want them to get a draft. BUUUT, this is just how I do things. Good luck! |
How exciting! Please keep us posted and send pictures soon! Angela <>< |

I thank you all so much...Mom and babies are doing good so far. I am not sure if all the placenta's are out. She ahd them by herself in the midlle of the night! No noise from her at all. the night before her temperature was still between 100.0 and 99.9 never dropped alot. She didnt act any different them she has been acting all week. I had no clue she was ready, I woke up and went to let her out and there she was with the puppies all clean and no mess in the whelping box! However the dark black/ blue blood has been on the newspaper... from her cleaning them...THANK YOU AGAIN FOR ALL YOUR HELP ! I WILL TAKE PICTURES TODAY AND TRY TO LEARN HOW TO POST THEM......
