Breeding Help So I have a Toy Yorkie. She is 4lbs and a year and a half. She has already had her first cycle and will probably be coming into estrus in about a month or so. I have a friend who has a 4lb male who was going to be her stud. However, this little boy was a naughty one and his mommy decided enough was enough and got him neutered. I am now without a stud who is appropriate in size to breed with my little girl. I need to find someone who has a stud who is healthy but I live in an area where there aren't very many toys. Does anyone know of anyone who lives in California who has a wonderful stud? Or can you point me in the right direction as far as looking up breeders on the internet? |
Just my opinion, but I wouldn't breed a 4lb baby. But if you decide to do so, you might want to ask you vet if he knows of anyone. |
Oh I guess I should have stated in my beginning message. I am a Vet Tech and have been working with animals for 7 years. I know what the risks are and I will be monitoring her progress. If I find that her pups are getting to big for her to give natural birth I will have her pregnancy terminated and have her spayed at the same time. |
I have to ask this. How are you going to find out if the puppies are too big unless you wait until she is about ready to deliver them and do an xray? Are you going to abort them then? Sorry, I know this isnt the questioned you asked but I am curious. As for the actual question, you could go to Puppysites or a site like that and look up breeders in your area and inquire about stud service with them. Good luck!!!!!!!!!!! |
Since you are a vet tech, what tests have you done on your little girl? Have you had her evaluated by a judge, exhibitor/breeder or handler to see if she is of breeding quality? Any reputable breeder will want to know these things. Also, you would need to do a lot of research on the stud before you even think of breeding. Same things apply, all the tests done, bloodlines, quality... and remember, the size of the stud doesn't really mean that much. You must look at the grandparents, great grandparents.. My advice would be go to some shows and speak with the breeder/exhibitors there in your area and get their advice. One last thing, there are no toy Yorkies, just Yorkies.. Please don't take what I'm saying as harsh, I'm just another one of those passionate Yorkie lovers that believe in only breeding when it's done to improve the breed. |

No offense taken to the Toy Yorkie remark. I know that there really isn't a thing as a Toy Yorkie, but I was using it as a descriptive word. As far as test go I am taking her in to work with me next week to have x-rays taken for OFA and her Brucella test just went out the other day. I haven't thought of going to a show. Thanks for that piece of advise. Now to find one that is in my area. I don't really have the time to travel around California and go to many dog shows. I totally understand and agree with you on researching studs and their family lines. I want to avoid "bad" genetics and the possibility of breeding her to a stud that is in her family line. |

Sorry if I confused you with one of my replies. I was rushed and was leaving to go back to work. What I was saying was that I would have her monitored during her pregnancy by ultrasound (throughout the pregnancy) and an x-ray a few weeks prior to when she is due. If we find out early on during the pregnancy that her health declines and it is apparent that she should not be pregnant then I will have the pregnancy terminated. If she does well throughout her pregnancy but it is known that the pups will be too big for her then she will have a C-Section. In both cases she will be spayed so that she will be a healthy young girl that will live a long full life without any Uterine complications in the future. |
