Need help reading pedigree and sizing up puppy! 5 Attachment(s) Hi everyone, I am interested in showing and am seriously thinking of getting this little puppy. Can you look at the pictures and the pedigree and tell me what you think. Any input on the lines? Would you pay $2000 for this puppy? Any advice would be appreciated. I forgot to say the big pic is the dad, the one with the red backround is the baby, and the mom's pic you have to click on. |
Tara, are those AKC papers? |
DivaPup Those are supposed to be copies of the mom and dad's pedigrees, but I don't know if they came from the AKC or where. The mom, dad, and baby are supposed to be AKC registered. Do the pedigree charts look wierd or something? |
LOL, Tara!! I didnt mean they looked wierd. I was just asking. I am sure that Pat or Rini will answer your question re pedigree:) Most people will tell you that you cannot judge show quality this young tho. JMO. |
pup They look to be AKC lines, but ask for sure. Dam has a much better pedigree then the sire. How old is the puppy when you get it? Male or female? What is the breeders show record? It is so hard to judge a puppy by a face on shot. How big is it? You need someone you trust to go withyou and look at the puppy, coat color, texture, bites, topline, on and on. If I knew the breeder to be well respected for selling show pups, I would be much more willing to do it..but all depends on so many factors. I do not like the fact the male has a pet pedigree..you are buying something. to show, then reproduce, it needs a soild foundation behind it..The dam is champion-sired and pedigree is much better...this dam should be bred to a nice champion of quality lines and in one generation the pedigree will be first class. This is just my opinion and the pup is not insanely priced. Best wishes |
Puppy Look for a puppy that is at least three months of age if you want to consider to show. If you can get your hands on 5 to 6 months much better odds. You can not tell what a baby younger then three months will do. Remember to be shown the dog must have an outgoing personality and want to be in the limelight. Hard to tell that on a 8 week old puppy. Go to some local shows and look at the type of Yorkies being shown in your area. Take a look at the mom and dad? Do they look like the dogs in the ring? If they do you may have a good deal. Price on the puppy is not bad. Male or female? Remember showing is hard work and expensive- don't expect yo make a return on your investment for a long time. Often we place our dogs with handlers to finish them as Champions. At times a handler can finish them with less time and financial investment Wnalegria : |
I noticed the lack of ch in the sires lineage. The dam has a decent pedigree and I know some of the lines as does Pat, I am sure. I would do as Pat suggested about shows etc. Maybe someone near you would mentor you and that would be more valuable than anything. Maybe the breeder you are buying fromwould agree..I personally do not like the ear set on hte puppy but that could just be his youg age. I would talk at great length to the breeder for any and all advice you can get. You cannot tell one breeder that another does not like something about the puppy. Politics are all over and a thick skin is a MUST. I would have as many people evaluate it as possible, but do not reveal the breeder's name at first. You could get into a bad position between two competitors..GOOD LUCK!!! |
Pat is right. Mom has some of Janet Jackson's dogs in her pedigree from "Steppin' Up" kennel. She is the current president of the YTCA. |
Thanks Everyone Thanks everyone for your help. You have given me many things to consider. WhispersMom -- thanks for the warning about the politics, belive it or not, I already got a taste of that when I was contacting breeders about show potential dogs and they would bad mouth other breeder's dogs out of the blue (I never even mentioned I was interested in the other breedre's dogs). One of the members on here sent me a PM about another puppy that has better lines, so I am going to look into him as well. Just a question, of the breeders around here, is anyone familiar with the lines of Le Chaz yorkies or EvenStar yorkies? Thanks again for your help. I'll keep you posted. |
Tara, I thought one of those 2 names sounded vaguely familiar..I looked in Oct-Nov issue of TYTM and on pg 45 there is a pic of Evenstar's Little Rascal receiving BOB at the Rocky Mt. show.. |
EvenStar Little Rascal Whispersmom, from what I've learned, EvenStar's Little Rascal is quite the yorkie. He was first shown in December of 2003 and received his champioship in January of 2005. I bet the picture you saw was when he got the 5 point major. Not bad for a small guy! He is only 4 1/2 pounds! I just didn't know anything about the rest of the yorkies in their line. |
pup Good Luck to you..being in Texas, you have some very good show breeders to contact. |
Thank you Pat, Thank you for your well wishes. Texas does have a large number of show breeders, unfortunately, many of them do not want to sell a puppy for show, though they will gladly sell a pet quality one. There seems to be a certain clique you need to belong to in order to get one. It seems like some have forgotten that they were once new and looking for a show pup and had to start somewhere. I have decided that I am not in any hurry though and so I'm sure that a show pup will come available some time. |

pup Been there, done that and I not only bought a Tee shirt stating the fact...I took picutres. LOL You know what will get you a puppy? Go to the shows and let people get sick of your pitiful face. Talk and get to know breeders..it will take time, but the squeaky wheel gets attention. I would get to know breeders and ask to join the Yorkie club..it will take awhile...but breeders got sick of me drooling on their Yorkies and let me in..LOL |
Show puppy Pat gave you good sound advice. Show breeders want to make sure that if they trust you with a puppy you will follow through and show. Showing is very hard and very expensive. You should plan on spending on the average $3,000.00 finishing a dog to his/her Championship. That does not include purchasing the puppy. You will spend every weekend on the road and a lot of time learning how to train and show the puppy. Get to know some local show breeders. Pick one who has the type of dog you like- bug the heck out of them- learn about the breed- read all the books that have been written- learn the bloodlines past and present- go to dog shows- ask questions. Be willing to learn. Wnalegria |
Dear Show Prospect, The ear set seems to far apart and the pedigree is very weak in all generations. I just paid 2500.00 for a puppy with all dogs Champions in four generations except one. The 5 generation most dogs were champions. I was able to choose the nicest of 6 puppies and the seller was a 25 year experenced show breeder and exhibitor who is happy to help others get started. If you want any numbers to some nice breeders let me know i have meet 2 that dont require a long contract Good Luck :o) |
It's funny, I looked at the EvenStar page of CH.Rascal, and by looking at his puppy picture, you really didn't know how beautiful he was going to turn out. He didn't look any more special than a lot of our babies. That's why it's so hard to "see" the future in a puppy until they are a little older. Good luck in finding your little one... |

Hahaha yorkierose....too funny. I called a local breeder here in Illinois and she suggested the same thing...just make pest of yourself until they get to know you! I'm wondering though...how do I get a list of the shows near me? What publication are they printed in? And if they sell you a "pet quality" yorkie...does that mean he/she will not look like the standard of the breed? :animal-sm |
Pedigrees/Dog Shows You have some Checkmates in there too - from Canada. Nice line! :-) And on the other one - can't read all, but saw Dot's line in the back. Dot's is also a nice line. CH. Dot's Top Banana was beautiful. You can get on line with AKC to see when the shows are and can view all winners of each show. Pay attention to the breeder names. Here are some web sites:http://www.onofrio.com/index2.html http://www.infodog.com/showInfo/showCal.htm http://www.akc.org/events/search/index.cfm Have fun! Dog shows are very interesting and fun to watch. |
