What is red leg? Confused  I am confused with what a red leg is?? I can't seem to find out what exactly it is. I have found information on Blue babies , Parties, golden, and chocolate Yorkies. All of wich I had never heard of till coming hear to YT. If anyone knows where I could find such information, I would appreciate it. Thanks! |
2 Attachment(s) A redleg is kind of a throw back so to speak. A yorkie that looks like one of the original ancesters, at least that's where we think the color and coat texture comes from. They are usually a bit longer of body, on the larger side, their hair is a bit harder and usually somewhat dry and brittle. They possess alot of strength and a strong depth of pigment. Breeders use them every 5th or 6th generation to bring color back into their lines. They are quite rare. Here's a pic of my redleg and one of a colleage. You can read more about them at angel yorkies under Britney Bluebell as Julie has one as well. |
You described my red leg boy that I just adopted out perfectly. He was ALL MUSCLE! Gorgeous, but definitely not standard. He was used to sire one litter and threw beautiful pups. His coat was dense, never did turn blue, just had hairs that were running thru it. I'll post a pic of him. I have them on dropshots somewhere. Kristie |
Actually show breeders do not use red leg in their breeding program for many years now as there is no need to. There are many good coat and colour Yorkies out there in the show breeder world that will throw good coat and colour. Since i have gotten into the Durrer line, who is known for coat and colour, mine have improved a lot in that area with very nice pups. I would not use a line that has red leg anywhere within 5 generations of the pedigree. Blast away, I work with far too many 30 year + quality show breeders and follow as they say. |
tami....i love love the glasses. how cute it that!!! |
Why would you get blasted for stating YOUR opinion and practices? Everyone is entitled to their own thoughts and opinions. If we were all the same, it'd make life very boring. Kristie |
Thank you for the information Ladyhawk, The pictures helped out a bunch. They do look like they are a bit taller and longer then the average Yorkie. The also look like pictures I have seen of the early yorkies. I have been doing a lot of reading lately and do not recall the book title, but they had a lot of older early breed pictures from England in it. Thank you again for posting the visual aid for me! |

Are they prone to carry a congenital/hereditary health diseases? Or just a coat that is dark in color and short? I know that all yorkies could have health problems and I am sorry for a silly question. |
Would you guess my Mickey as a red leg? 3 Attachment(s) I some times look at him and he sure looks red to me. on his pedigree it says hes Black/Tan |
1 Attachment(s) Here is my red leg. I can usually tell a red leg by their face. They have a narrow snout and they look like a little fox in the face. |
Thanks for the info, I always wondered what it meant to;) they are very pretty:) I like all the red they have. |
1 Attachment(s) I haven't been breeding my redleg long enough to tell what will be down the line. I only needed one brood bitch out of her so she's retired now. Julie Burnette of Angel Yorkies has gotten numerous champions out of her redleg so hopefully I will be as lucky. Roxie is very strong and smart, redlegs seem to carry the strenth of the yorkie ancesters. Your correct in that they look like the older yorkies, Roxie is shaped just like Hadderfield's Ben ( I think that's the correct name). She does throw beautiful dark puppys. |

I hate to sound silly but are only girl redleg's used to ad the strength to a line?? I keep seeing that a girl redleg was used to get the stronger features( color, bone, knees..) This is very interesting when you think about it. The Yorkie was started out as a selected mix of different dogs till we got to what they are today. Thank you for the information! |
