She Put Them In...... THE COLD AIR DUCT!!!!! I have the mouthiest, busybody momma on the planet. She came home and jumped right in her box, put the pups in...all was perfect. Fast forward to 6:15am... The puppies are in my walk in closet in the box out of hte way of everyone. I woke up because I heard a puppy whining LOUDLY! I rolled over and found Angel with a puppy in her mouth in the middle of the room, so I scolded her and she ran under my dresser. Not a bad place, but not where I wanted her..so I bend down to get them out and she wasn't there. We recently pulled the carpet out of our master bedroom and the duct cover didnt get put back on...she found it and had two out of three puppies in the duct!! She hopped back out, and I run to move the dresser and see if i could get them..no luck. I go to see if anyone is left in the box and there was one puppy left, so I shut the door to the walk in and went downstairs to try to figure out where they were. I heard her jump back in her "den." I came upstairs to verify that I was in the right place downstairs and she had pulled both puppies back out of the duct..I guess because she couldn't get their brother out of the closet. UGGHHHH!!!!!!! She is driving me batty. So, she is now in lockdown in the upstairs alcove..we have large dormer storerooms in the top floor of the house...one is bigger than an avg bedroom, so I put her box in there, covered the top, gave her her tums and food/water and shut the door. I had no clue how I was going to get them out, so i'm glad she did it. She is very mouthy. Anytime you touch a puppy, she has her mouth on it. I sure hope she settles down soon. Kristie |
Oh, my goodness!! That's pretty scary! Glad she got them out. I think I would confine her also so she can't go far or have access to anything like that. |
Ya, i thought i had lol...she was shut in the bedroom!! Kristie |
I would have freaked out, and been tearing down walls. YIKES. |

They are just to smart, out witting us at times! LOL. Glad they are all okay. |
Maybe you should have an x-pen. A box isn't enough to keep her confined if she is getting them out of the box she will have them dragged all over the bedroom. she wouldn't be able to get out an x-pen. |
Wow! That is scary! My mom's stay with their new babies in a humans baby play pen and once they get a little older we move to an xpen. This has worked out perfect for me. Good luck! I hope mama will quit moving them! :) |
She is going in the playpen as soon as I get back home! I have to run errands really quick but then its coming out of the garage!! Thanks, Kristie |
That was going to be my suggestion. She and the babies need to be somewhere where they will stay warm and safe. The sharp metal edges in the furnace duct would have had me totally freaked out. Quote:

With a mother like this I would put her in a crate, if she is determined she will try to jump out of the expen and if she has a puppy in her mouth when doing that, it could be fatal or even jumping back into an expen if she got out for a bit. You can loose pups from the mothers jumping on them. I would go with a nice safe sound crate to protect her and the babies, make it den like with a blanket covering it so she feels she has the best den where her kids are safe and sound. Good Luck and so glad you found them before it was too late, the cold metal from the duct would be enough to chill one to death. Deana Prestigeous Yorkies |
I can't even begin to imagine the panic you must have felt! We have a large master bathroom and I put a gate in the door. It seems that mommy just wants an enclosed cozy den. We started putting her box under my vanity and put the end of a towel in the drawer above it so it hung down in front of her box and basically made a nice enclosed area for her. She settled down after that and never tried to take them anywhere else. We also found that we had to clean the box out 3 or more times a day because she was really picky about the box being clean. If it even got a little dirty, she would try to move them. (I wish my kids were so picky when they were growing up... ) By just using a towel and not a kennel, she had the freedom to leave when she wanted and get back to them without any help. Would love to see pics! |
I usually whelp in a puppy play pen with a top on it. Off the ground easier for me to help whelp (my ole back). Mom and pups are out of the way and safe. I line botom with rubber tiles so they have sure footing when they begin to walk and not walking on the grates, and washable piddle pads on top of that. Whelping box in a corner. I've made a cover to go over the entire pen to keep them warm. Usually begin confining mom in there about a week before her first due date. She leaves at when weaning is done, but puppies stay. |
I use an xpen also and have it coverd on the top(hubby made something for me),My female will climb out of her pen.I have another female who likes a really dark nice place to keep hers ,we drape blankets over it so she has a little tunnel to her box and she is very content with that. I have one who liked to put them in my potted house plants also(before I got the xpen) We would have dirt all over the place from her digging out a nice spot for them then we would find those poor little pups in the plant all full of dirt. Instinct for her to find a nice quiet dark place to hide her pups. Heat ducts is a new one for me never heard of that before, would have been a job for you getting them out if she could not have retrived them. I can just see the mess of trying to get out those tiny babies.LOL |
Oh my goodness. Thank you Lexie for not doing that to me...I would have aged 25 years and I really can't afford that!! I don't know what I would do if Lex started carrying around her 7 all over the house. You have all my best. |
I think I am going to put her in the baby playpen and cover it. Hopefully she'll stop her wandering ways. The vent thing definitely has be on my toes constantly. I think at night I'll put her playpen in the closet (walk in) so I can still hear her if she's up to "no good." lol. THanks for all the suggestions. My other female didnt ever try to move her pups.
