When to dock on a tiny pup? My smallest pup is 2.5 oz and I am now having to tube feed. He is weaker than my other but tomorrow is their appnt for this. When should I do his tail or is there a time when its "too late" to do it? He was born without dew claws so only tail is needed but I didnt want to do anything to him that could slow him any more. When should I have this done? |
He could wait a day probably 2 longer than the other if he's much smaller and probably should if he's weak. |
I would hold off Susan until he gets a little stronger. He is going through enough right now he does not need the stress of that on top of it all. Good Luck with him, we are praying for you all. |
i have read on here if they are small, wait til the 5th day |
Healthy pups get docked at 3-5 days. Your vet won't dock the tail on the pup you are tube feeding. They have to be healthy and strong for this procedure. Talk to the vet, he may do it later or you may end up with a long tail. If you do end up with a long tail, count it as a blessing...it will be a rememberance of all of your hard work, love and dedication.:) I will pray for your little pup to live a long, healthy, happy life:luvu: |
I don't know anything about this but I know that the litter my Jersey came out of lost a little boy. He was tiny and the vet (Who also happens to be my vet for the past 10 years) reccomended against docking to the breeder as the pup was very tiny. The breeder insisted on having it done and she lost the pup. He bled to death. I was really upset when I heard this. As much as I love my vet I put some of the blame on him for caving in to what the breeder wanted rather then what was in the best interest of the pup. If your boy is tiny I really would either wait or just not have it done at all. Just my .02. It would be a shame to lose him just for esthtic purposes. Elaine |
You might have to bite the bullit on this one and not dock. |

after reading the replies I'd go the same way and not dock ..it doesn't sound worth the risk - Good luck with your puppy |

claws Good Luck to your baby...and have the vet check the legs for claws very carefully, sometimes they are so tiny you can't see them so easily. |
Many people love yorkies with long tails, so if you can't dock, don't worry about it. |
Is this the one you just got back from the vets with??? Is this the one your tube feeding to maintain its weight?? If so I would wait for a few more days to see how he's doing. Possibly not even dock his tail at all IMO. |
Its a long story but he isnt going to make it.:angel2dl: |
oh, I'm so sorry to hear that. My heart goes out to you and his Mamma:( |
Oh no!!! How sad... |

Well to make a long story short, he has a cleft palet SO bad the vet said that BIG IF I managed to get him to survive 3-5 more weeks with the tube feeding that his surgery would be very extensive and possibly not even be able to have any quality of life for him. He didnt have his tail docked.. I have been tube feeding him every 2 hours and he already has a raw little throat and a tiny bit of blood comes out on the tube. The vet said that its just because he is so small and that its painful to him. :cry8: So, at 4:00 today, less than 35 minutes, I am going to have him sent off to Rainbow bridge. I cant make him suffer. God love him he is such a fighter.:tinyheart I am down to ONE puppy and out a ton of money plus still owe half my stud fee. I cant watch this ever again so I am so done. I dont have the heart for these kinds of things.. Thanks for all the support and please dont say bad things to me about this as its been a hard enough decision on my own. Thanks again. :rip: Baby Cozmo... |

I am so sorry. I've just gone thru this very exact same thing two days ago! I know how you're feeling. |
I know this is very hard for you and I'm so sorry but I wanted to tell you that I had a pup born last July with a cleft and I bottled and syringe fed her and she is a living spit fire today. I kept her and she still has her handi cap but we make it work. They say when they get their adult teeth the cleft can close a little. My little one, her cleft is in her soft pallet. You can still seee it to this day and it didn't close up any. We didn't have surgery. It was alot of ups and down, but if your up to it, they can make it and I'll offer all my help to you that I can. Sending my prayers to you. |
I am so sorry.... I know how stressful, sad, and exhausting it is... my thoughts and prayers for you and that little baby. |
I'm sorry to hear about the puppy, but I think you did the right thing. Sometimes you have to love them enough to let them go and this was one of those times. |
Oh I am so sorry ............... |
so sorry So sorry for your loss, I am sure you didn't want him to suffer any more.. god bless your baby. Debbie |
So many times cleft palate babies don't make it. I'm sure it was the hardest decision, but it really was an act of kindness to him. So sorry for your loss...... |
