I wonder if the people that are asking for a $200.00 Yorkie might possibly be thinking " hay I see that they have an AKC Lab ( or other breed) listed for $200 in the paper why should the Yorkie cost more" They did not research this kind of dog and think that if other breeds cost less, why should they have to pay more to have a Yorkie.

My mother in law thinks this way and I have tried to explant to her that it's not unusual for a Yorkie to be priced at 800 or more and she said that it is ridiculous that someone would pay that much for a dog!:rolleyes: Needless to say she does not need to know that I am getting my lil guy for more then $800!:p

When we went looking for a yorkie puppy we went to Reece's breeder to look at a brand new litter and Reece was the last one from the previous litter (different mother) so we werent expecting to buy him that day...but nonetheless...we couldnt afford to bring him home until two weeks later..we made a couple payments and then brought him home...NOT that we couldnt afford him, we do have a savings account for emergencies with our family or our dogs but we dont touch that account to buy a new puppy...we wait until the money is gathered from our weekly paychecks to do that...so a payment plan dosent necessarily mean the person doesnt have money...just not money on hand at the time...so paying weekly or bi-weekly is an easier softer way to buy a yorkie and if I were a breeder I would certainly ask a MILLION questions for sure...but also could understand why someone would need to make payments..

As I recall, there had been a few difficult dogs in the WH and they were banished to the kennels because they chewed on alot of valuable furniture/rugs...one of the Reagans larger dogs..a Bouvier I think...

when I turn someone down, I just say, sorry, i don't think my puppy is a good fit for you. if they get miffed then I say, i'm sorry you are upset but i have a right to say where my puppies go. that usually ends it. if they persist, I just don't answer them. i recently turned down someone in Boston because of the other dog in her home and she agreed with me when It was done. also, recently, I had to cancel a sale to a special friend just recently and it really hurt me. probably as much as it did the person. But we do have a responsibility to these little guys to pick the best homes for them.

They wanted one for free but, planned to charge you (taxes).mmmmmmmmmmm What's wrong with this picture.

It would certainly open their eyes if you had a page of 'statistics' showing the costs involved...shots, 'proper' food, grooming costs, spay/neuter fees, emergency vet bills, etc. They would see that there is a lot more involved besides the initial cost of the Yorkie.

I have just simply said I don't think this puppy is a good match for you.

I too have recently "unsold" a puppy because he did not meet the standard I use to sell puppys as potential show. I would rather the buyer wait for a different puppy, or refer him/her to a fellow breeder, than sell one that some one will be disappointed in buying. Just my values.

That's how we are too. We put a deposit down after carefully looking at several puppies to reserve OUR girl - the larger, more energetic female that was a better fit for our home with rescued beagle puppy and two young children. :-)

We put the deposit down to reserve the one we wanted.

We paid out the remainder the next week.

Not becuase we can't afford vet care - but because I refuse to go into to debt to purchase an animal. :-) I wouldn't, however, refuse to tap into savings or charge vet bills to a card if necessary just like I would never refuse to take my children to the doctors when needed.

But I also understand that not everyone is as resposible as most of us on this group are - after all....those of us here are here becuase we care about the breed and our animals.

Hi guys. I am not a breeder either. I have to admit that my husband bought me my Holly with an annual bonus. Otherwise, like many others, I would have had to gather it from different paychecks. We do get this big lump sum every year and the DH makes some good mula, but we also have a lot of bills. I really love my little Holly and I do have a vet fund for her. Fortunately I haven't had to use it except for vaccines and soon her spaying. But even that is not costing me a fortune. She is on a proper food (Canidae and Innova) and lots and lots of love. There are a lot of people who have a lot of love to give. In emergency situations, there are measures to take when you are caught by surprise. Like in everything. There are a lot of people with questionable lifestyles that could drop 5 grand for a Yorkie in a heartbeat even though they will not be in the best of environments. tiggerr36792 said it best. You should look at all aspects, not just money. Sometimes we can't afford the lump sum to buy a yorkie, but usually these little angels give us parents enough time to gather some "mula" before they need the expensive food and/or medical care.
