Room Temperature for Newborn Puppies Does anyone know how long it is before newborns can regulate their own temperature? It seems like I had read about two weeks. Is that right? I am wondering because the nursery is also my home office and I am really getting hot in here!!! (I have to work in here all day). When can I lower the temperature? They are already in a wire crate covered with a blanket on 3 sides and a crib bumper pad on all four sidesto avoid drafts. They are one week old today and have already both doubled their birth weights. I really don't want to do the heating pad, though I do have one. The reason is there isn't that much room for mom to get very far away and I would hate for her to be any hotter. Any help would be appreciated. TIA |

Temp at whelping time should be about 85 and dropping slowly daily. They should be able to regulate their on temp betweem 2&3 week. Taking their temps twice a day helps you watch how they are doing. |
i read between 10 and 12 days old. |
Nancy, Thanks for this thread. I went right into the "Puppy room" and closed the vent. I just never thought about it, and your timing was just perfect for Lexie plus her 7 bundles!! Thanks again! Charlene:) |
Thanks so much for all of your answers! It is so nice to have a community of breeders willing to help one another. Hopefully I can sart inching the vent open in here now. It is still 80 degrees and they are 8 days old today. They are growing so much! The bigger one is really growing. She is like a little vacuum cleaner when it comes to eating. She goes from one nipple to the next and completely drains it, then when she gets to the little one she pushes her off! But I am watching to make sure she is still gaining. I have had to let her nurse first a few times, and keep the other one back, but she is doing well. |
Our "big girl" weighed 6.2 oz at birth and today at 4 days she weighed in at 9.5.....unreal!!!! The small started at 4.1 and today was 6.0. What is Lexie sneeking into them? They all are doing great and that is all that matters. Good night all!! |
