They just don't quite see it the same way we do, do they?? |
Last year we had made reservations a year in advance to go to a beach in Oregon. It was also going to be a celebration for my daughter's 30th birthday. Well I couldn't go because of puppies and I had a very unhappy and disappointed daughter.... everyone couldn't and didn't understand... and yes they thinks I'm nuts.... |
Most people don't understand the breeder's passion. None understand the responsibility of breeding, so, we are always going to have those disappointed friends, family, etc. So, as breeders either accept it or quit breeding. I remember one of my female's first litter...she went till the final day of her last breeding. My breeder was assisting me with the the whelping. We were at her house in her guest bedroom. Both my mentor and I were laying in bed, watching my female very closely, feeling very sorry for ourselves because we weren't going to be able to leave for a dog show the next morning. At 9:30 P.M. we witnessed a huge contraction go through my females body. We looked at each other and both went "YES" we're going. She delivered her last pup at 12:40 A.M. Called hubby and told him he was to have nursery duty over the weekend. He was there at 9:00 A.M. contacted the vet for his cell phone number and I was on the road at 10:30 A.M. |
I laughed when I read this....I teach high school and one of my litters came on a Sunday night in November, and I missed 3 days of school (work) because I will not leave a mom home alone especially since she was a first time mom. I had fellow teachers and students calling me and all worried about me. I just told them that my best friend had a multiple birth and I wanted to be with her, and everyone understood!! (I only told them who my best friend was when I got back to work with the pictures!!!) I am very lucky that my direct supervisor, an Assistant Principle, is a dog lover herself, and she understood completely!! I also hardly ever miss school so that helped also! |

I've missed SEVERAL special occasions because of having a girl due, Thanksgiving being one. I'm glad I was there because she delivered on Thanksgiving! My mom tells me that my dogs have taken over my life and that I don't have a life. I don't care, I worry about them and will be there for them!! I agree with Mardelin, most people don't understand and when you get into it, you better be ready for the LONG haul !! |

Well, this isn't a BIG event but tonight we were planning on going to the Goodells Fair to the Motor Cross with several family members.....BUT....guess who's home , because Meiah had a temp drop this morning ?????? :) It was 98.4 at 9:30, then around 11 it was 99.6, but I'm not leaving her home. Thankfully hubby understood. It could be just a fluke, but I don't want to take any chances. So..........................here I sit......................waiting.................. ............but Meiah never read the rule book :p so who knows when she will decide to bring those precious babies into the world! :p |
Just work, I suppose. |
I laughed SO much when I read this. Where would I even begin to list everything we have missed for a whelping. :yelrotflm We've missed dinner dates, family birthdays and big concert dates where we had bought tickets months ahead. As a matter of fact we have tickets for The Police this Tuesday and it looks like we will not be able to go, because our Penny-Poo is just about ready. I do believe the biggest events were Christmas Eve and Christmas Day two years in a row when both our Penny and Roxy delivered on both days. The family would have understood one year, but both? When you commit to breeding it is a true love affair and the doggies ALWAYS come first. I could not imagine ever taking the chance and leaving them ...even for a few hours. They would never leave us ..... |
Hey they'll get over it, but you can't get back what you miss while your away. |
So far Sleep thats about the only thing I am missing right now. |
family events, theater shows, concerts, gourmet cooking club, etc. I was fortunate last year that one of my partners was able to take one of my girls who was due right as we got back from a long planned trip --my girl waited for us to pick her up and bring her home--she had her pups 3 hours later--she waited for me to have them. |
