Mastistis In Tiffanie Hello I think Tiffanie has Mastistis in her left bottom teat, It's hard and red and swollen big. It just hit her this evening, I check her on and off during the day, every day. By the time I found it this evening it was to late to take her to the vet so I ask them on the phone this evening if it was okay for our babies to nurse & they said yes, I said U know she has six and they said yes. She has an app. for the vet @ 10:45 am in the morning. So do any of U know what I can do to help her? Can she nurse? She never had this before so this is all new to us. I looked it up on the web but couldn't find much on it to see if I can/should help her or if I need to help feed. Right now our babies are all gaining VERY good and I'm not having to help, but man they act like they are starving to death as soon as she enter the baby bed, they attack (I know they do that anyway but this is diffrent, not the way they usually do) her so I still wonder if they are getting enough. She stands up some when they are nursing so I wonder if this is a sign that she's not wanting to feed??? Then she'll lay down for them, like now she's not been in there 5 minutes and she's layin' on her belly as if to keep them off her. I just don't want to loose any babies due to this. They will be 3 weeks tomorrow. Any thoughts? Does anyone know how they get this or why? I'll post weights and new photos tomorrow in the nursery. Hugs Lee & 9 :aimeeyork's |
From what I read online if it is Mastitis the infected breast may be filled with bloody pus and pups should not nurse on the infected breasts. It suggest you cover it or wean pups. Is there any way you can cover it to be on the safe side until tom morning? |

Hey Lee, I would guess that the teat isn't infected yet so that the pups need to nurse on it. The lower teats get very full and sometimes are harder to latch onto so the pups stick to the easy ones. The unused one becomes engorged and swollen, warm to the touch. You would be able to tell if it is mastitius, she would be lethargic and have a fever due to the infection. Get one of your good eaters to nurse on the engorged teat or take warm towels to soften it and hand express some milk for her. That will give her releif and make it easier for a pup to latch on. Let me know how it goes. By the way Sage can jump up on the couch now and is using the doggy door to do her business outside. |
How did everything go over night? how is she this morning? |
Poor baby !!! I hope she's going to be ok and sending get well wishes |

I hope all is well with your girl. I too had one who did this on the bottom teats, did the warm compress and expressed some of the milk. I took her to the Vet just to be on the safe side. He check all teats and said the only one that looked to have a little more thicker looking milk was a top teat. Did the compress on it and she was fine the next day. |
I'd take her temp first. Like LadyHawk said, a warm compress and gently relieving her a little before a putting vigorous pup on would be a good idea. It's pretty painful. |
When Mikayla has mastitis, I was worried about the puppies eating off of them and the vet told me to make sure they eat off of them. All of hers were swollen and it happened overnight. I felt so bad for her but I used the warm wash cloth and actually milked them myself to get the pressure off of her and she was fine after that. |

Peanut had this happen recently and I gave her a nice luke warm bath letting her soak in it for 15 minutes. After she was dried and relaxed I expressed some out of her swollen teat. Then put her in the whelping box and had the puppies nurse on that teat one at a time so they could help express the back-up of milk. In 1 hour I checked her teat again and placed a warm washcloth on it for about 10 minutes, then expressed some more milk again manually. Put her back in the whelping box and let the puppies nurse again. By morning it was totally back to normal and she hasn't had a problem since. I wish you the best and hope this helps you as much as it helped us out. |
