Need to know what kind of tests need to be done? I've been considering to breed my female yorkie and doing research on the subject. I'm still weighing the option that she "can" have difficulty and other issues during this time. But I was wondering that seeing that many people are saying, to be sure that the male stud is tested and such, are there tests that should be done for my female as well? and what is the estimated cost of each type of tests? |
I will bet you will be sorry you asked this question!!! Good Luck with your breeding experience. I have my stud DNA tested and it cost $35.00 through AKC, and I make sure females are in perfect health and defect free. Again, good luck!! |
There is a lot of responsibility in breeding. First question to ask yourself is why you want to breed your girl you likely bought as a pet especially with all the YOrkies out there needing homes? Do you know the background of the dogs in the pedigree and what genetic problems they might be carrying? Just because she doesn't have any doesn't mean she isn't a carrier and it could show up in her progeny. I have posted on this topic many times on this forum, I am sure you will find all sorts of info if you do a search on this forum. Just because you can use a male or female for breeding doesn't necessarily mean you should. |
I don't think you will be sorry you asked the question because you are obviously trying to do your research first before you make the decision to breed your dogs. You will probably get some good advice and some of the opinions may differ but at least you are asking the questions first and that is a good thing. |

ahahhaa funny that you say that! in a way, i am sorry to ask. but then again, i'd rather be safe than sorry! i've already and am still wrestling with the idea, that this can be a be risk to me, my family, and my little girl. i want to be sure that i've done all i can to prepare for a breeding, if i should do one. |

i'm not trying to use my female to make easy money...that's not what i'm in it for..and if because of someone's careless actions (not to do proper testing) that is going to jeporadize my girl's life, then it's like threatning a part of me as well. |

IMO one of the most important test to run is for Brucellois. I check for any breed faults, LP, heart murmur etc I look at the temperament. Study the bloodlines to see what is being thrown, bad fronts, cottony coats etc A great book to read is The Complete Book of Dog Breeding by Dan Rice,DVM Good luck.:) |

Thanks for the suggestions...I see that you are in North Carolina. What part? I was from there too, I still have family there. |
I'm in Hendersonville. I love it here. |

Also Jan L. was right about knowing the lines. You have to kinda of predict what you may get and you want as close to the standard as possible. Research and learn those lines and know the faults of each male and female before breeding. You want them to compliment one another and be as close to the standard as possible. Then you have to have some money in savings for when the pups come just in case of emergencies - about 500.00 (you may need a c-section). Then you have their regular pup exams and shots about 55.00 for 2 pups total each time you go in for their boosters (but I get a little discount - no office visit added till pups are 8 weeks of age. And boy the 44.00 office visit added to the shots, etc really makes it add up fast. Then I also get the pups bile acid test done too. Add $57.00 for each pup. This is all just normal things to expect. You are doing it right first by asking and checking out everything before. I am in Georgia too! T. |
Have eyes tested for Progressive Retinal Atrophy. Ears Tested. Definately bile acid tests, although this only proves the dog doesn\'t have shunt, it doesn\'t prove it isn\'t a carrier. |
