Copper's future? Ok here goes... I have been asked already if I will stud Copper, even the vet has asked me if I have considered it. He is of great lines, has top line, nice tail set, ears are great, no structural problems as of yet, adult teeth will be checked again next month at 6 months,so far so good, his coat is silky. He should be between 3 1/2 and 4 lbs. But here is my dilemma, his coloring is really dark, both parents took longer to completely clear their gold. Mom is really dark blue, really deep gold, i think that she is beautiful. He is also a little wavy, not curly but he back legs have a bit of wave. I am so in love with yorkies and Copper is my 1st. I do not want to breed pups that aren't of great quality. Is the coat something that is easy to correct? is it to standard if his coat takes longer than 18months to clear the gold? (his mothers didn't until about 19 according to breeder. and he looks identical to her) These are my concerns so far and I am sure that I will have more as time goes on. i am a perfectionist and copper is perfect to me, But flaws are flaws especially if you could pass them on. Bought a book on genetics too over the internet so hopefully that will help when I get it. Any input is appreciated. Thank you. sorry so long |
I have done some reading and think that I have answered my own question... I posted this to quickly. I have decided that even though Copper is a good quality dog I didn't buy him to breed, i got him for the great companionship that he has given me, and I shouldn't breed him just because a few people have sugested that i do. I have also decided that I should leave the future of this breed to the wonderful people on here and elsewhere that work so hard to produce amazing examples of the breed that we all love so much. If I wanted a show/stud dog, than that is what I would have purchased, I purchased a great dog to be my buddy and will not breed him just because he is turning out nicely!!! thank you to all who have read this and to all that want to breed in the future i hope that this forum helps you with your decision as much as it has me! |
post pics so breeders can tell you what they think! |
Amy, You have a wonderful attitude. Also, it can take up to 3+years for a Yorkie to obtain his coat. I breed & show. I study pedigrees like a hawk...having been doing so for over 30 years. I do not go just on the looks of the dog, but what that dog can produce. I also will never do a repeat breeding if the is ANY flaw in the pups, I don't just mean the icing (looks) but the cake. I have a beautiful bitch bred her to 1 of my dogs (that coat me mega $$) and they produced a litter of pups. 1 having a LP. So can not breed those 2 together again. I guess what I want to say is for me breeding & showing does not produce an income for me. Maybe if I lowered my standards I could make some $$, but then I would not be able to sleep at night. Thank-you for apprecating what, hopefully, most of us are doing.:) :) :) |
Thank you Jan, I would love to someday make an impact on the yorkie world, but just not yet. I have alot to learn. I love this forum so much, their is so much insight here. It is a powerful rescorce for us newbies. It seems that there is alot more to it than just matching a pretty pair. Like you mentioned with your two. And I have also found that if your doing something only for the money than your not doing it for the right reason. Too many people breed because they can, or they have papers. Thankyou again, this just makes me feel that much better about getting him fixed. |
Welcome to YT! It is so nice to see people like you joining this forum. You have made an excellent decision. Maybe the day will come when you want to get into showing. There are some wonderful, reputable, exhibitor/ breeders on here that are alway willing to help with any questions you may have. We're always willing to help someone start out the right way. Again, welcome! |
