male studs Could someone give me some information regarding using a male for a stud. Someone asked me recently if I would like to use my 7 month old eventually for a stud since he's not neutered and has a good bloodline, etc. Im just wondering what things i should take into consideration before going ahead, any words of wisdom? We were going to get him neutered eventually, but we arent in any real rush, and i thought i might consider this. I've done a bit of research, but id like to hear from fellow yorkietalk members about their experiences or advice. Many thanks...im sure Gizmo will thank you as well in the long run! |
One thing ot remember is once a stud always a stud. Even after you get his fixed he will still lift his leg and mark. Most times they become more territorial and aggressive after they've been bred. You need to make sure that he conforms to the breed standared. Study his pedigree and make sure that he isn't a carrier for any congenital or genetic problems. Have him tested for LP, Legge-perthes, and STDs. If you have a showbreeder or a judge around it would be a good idea to have him evaluated by them. Using a dog once to stuc before neutering can ruin a good pet so consider your decision carefully. |
If you are going to get him neutered anyway I would not stud him. Stud dogs mark in the house and he probably wont stop when you have him neutered |
Great advise. If you choose to use him for stud, there is no going back. Be prepared for the changes. Even their urine is stronger. Have all the standard tests done one him, bile acids, eyes, hearing, heart tested. X-rayed for Leggs Perthes, checked for Luxatting Patellas, plus having all the standard sexaully transmitted disease tests performed. But, those are a few of the responsibilities. You also have the responsibility of assisting the breeder if they need help. And if for some reason the people where the breeder has placed the puppies can't keep the puppies any longer you have the responsibility of taking them back if the breeder can't. |

 . This is a very good thing to point out the fact that both male's owner and female's owner have responsabilities toward the puppies . |
wow thanks guys for the advice. This is most of the information i know already. Im leaning towards saying NO because he is a great little puppy now and i would hate to ruin him. There are honestly so many good dogs out there already, im sure i can spare gizmo the trouble!!! Thanks again for all the advice |
4 Attachment(s) I stud my dog out and I have to tell you it is definately a 24/7 hour job! He marks everything (thats his mission in life). Not to mention all the hard work involved just helping him out, during the "process". My little man is very little and when he can't reach, mommy has to give him a boost and "line" him up. (trying not to be graphic). It is not for the weak stomached. Though if you are truley interested in breeding, DO YOUR RESEARCH! Listen to the previous comments about disease and testing. Also you have to protect yourself and the dam's owner by producing a contract of some sort. The benefits are absolutely worth all the hard work if your intention is to better the breed and create some gorgeous babies~ Just becuase Im proud of my little man here are some pic's of Tino's first litter (first try! 6 babies) Last one is of me and my baby, enjoy!:) |
awwwwwwwwwww, see when i see that i TOTALLY want to stud him out, hed be perfect at producing babies, but the marking thing im not too fond of. Right now hes great, goes on his pee pad, but goes outside as well, no marking as of yet...loves to play with his toys, and doesnt hump things...well occasionally my arm when he first gets into bed at night. I would HATE for this to change...it would be so much easier on him and me probably to just say no, lol. I will continue my research and see down the road. Hes only 7 months now so i have a bit of time to really sit down and weigh the pro's and con's. |
Just think of your little man in a diaper becuase he can't control himself. Tino has to wear it out (hysterical) but I feel bad becuase he hates it. Also, can't leave anything on the floor or he will mark it~ I have to mop my floors several times a week just to keep up with him~ luckily its mostly in the kitchen. It's just the price you have to pay, Tino was great before and now he is leading the mission of peeing on EVERTHING! But for me I consider this to be worth it, as strange as that sounds becuase I knew what I was getting into.:D |
melmel84, is Tino a red legged yorkie? He sure looks like my little Dylan who is a red legged yorkie. I was just curious. Check out Dylan's dogster and see if you think he looks like Dylan. |
Same Situation... I am Right there with you. I am still debating whether or not to Neuter Berkley. I already discussed with another owner the possibility of studing him out- but if after that he will mark things and hump everything, I must say I cannot handle that at all. He is great right now the way he is- and Although it might be great to see him create a family of his own, I don't think he would miss the experience much- and I definitely would appreciate less clean-up. |
are you sure 100% that he would mark, or pee on everything....i mean hes totally great now i cant see him changing that much just from "doing it" lol....??? Thats what confuses me. |

It's funny because I was watching Dog Whisperer last night and he was talking about how unaltered pets tend to be a bit more aggressive because of their hormones running rampant. |
