Is my yorkie infertile? I have a lovely, smart 6 lb. female yorkie. Her mom and sisters have been good breeders. The woman I bought her from encouraged me to breed her. I bred her once through AI(she was 21 months old), and back in April through natural breeding(30 months old). Both studs have produced many litters, and I did progesterone testing both times (so dates were probably accurate). My female did not get pregnant either time. My vet just shrugged her shoulders and has said "Oh well, maybe you'll be third time lucky". A small animal reproductive expert here at our university has told me to do a series of things for the next breeding: antiobiotics, daily progesterone testing during heat cycle, early ultrasounds.... This all costs money, as have the stud fees. Should I give up ... have any of you had similar experiences??? |
bitch How valuable is this bitch to your breeding program? I would only go all out for a champion bitch. You have covered the basics in the first and second breeding with no luck. Many problems are genetic and you might go all out cost-wise to produce future bitches with the same fertility probems. If I owned my own stud I would breed her a third time, starting when the bitch stands and every other day until she goes out of heat (I would forget the vet and smears)..if she does not conceive, the chances are about nil she will the fourth or fifth time...if I had to pay for a stud service, I would not breed her..because then you are locked into a fourth breeding if it does not take...unless you have a good friend who will allow you to pay if it takes..I have done this with "Iffy" bitches... |
