Puppies born on day "56" So this is my story. I'm curious as to what everyones opinion is. Bell was breed on May 9th. (yes, it was a back to back pregnancy, I was not expecting her to be bred.) But, I'm a bad mommy and it happened! :( So on the 4th of July with a house full of people I noticed some green on my floor. At first I checked Bell, but everything looked good so I thought maybe one of the children dropped something. Then I noticed some more. I was thinking maybe one of the three had some poop on their butts. (my three seem to poop the nicest colors some times! ;) ) I decided I would clean up who ever it was, so I took Bell into my bathroom and started to cut off all her hair around her butt. That is when I noticed the green coming out of her vagina. I called my vet, who by the way is open 7 days a week from 7 AM to 7 PM. She said that they were very busy with 2 emergencies that just came in and I should go to the emergency vet, which I did. They vet examined her and decided to do an internal, me being so concerned over Bell didn't think twice. He said that all looked okay, but she probably either has a still born, or is reabsorbing a puppy. Sounded logical to me and off I went. About an hour later, Bell had strong contractions and gave birth to a puppy that wasn't formed yet. She had a terrible time when I took it away. About an hour after that she gave birth to another and then within 3 hours later she had 3 breathing puppies. All seemed small but looked good. We lost one on day two and now just have two left. The one girl is small 3.5 oz but I have to say she is a fighter and seems to be doing ok. She doesn't seem to be gaining any weight though. She belly seems full but she tires easy. I was so proud of her when I noticed that she was still sucking after 8 minutes. The boy is a little champ, he has gained .2 oz and moves around a lot. They have been alive 2 1/2 days now!:D My questions is this: Do you think the internal exam brought on Bell's contractions?? When he examined her, he made it a point to say she wasn't contracting! And how many litters have you heard of that were born on day 56, survived? Any suggestions would be great too! I keep them warm with a heating pad and I make sure they eat at least every other hour. I set the timer and I'm up checking them around the clock. Lastly Prayers, please send them this way, the babies need it. |
I think she was already in the beginning of labor when the vet checked her . Congratulations on the new puppies . One of my girls delivered pups on the 57 days , all the pups are alive and healthy . |
i know nothing about bredding, just wanted to send you a prayer, congrats & best to you with the new babies:) |
litter As we have discussed, it just happens. Since you saw a green discharge so early, it is obivious a placenta had separated..and that caused the first puppy to die most likely...I doubt the exam brought on contactions unless Bell was starting on her own. I would feed the girl to be sure..it may take too much energy to nurse and the calories she gets will go right into nursing, not gaining... There was a problem before the exam...pups were most likely on the verge of coming anyway. I have had many early litters...a few girls never went more then 56 or 57...some pups live and some do not..I wish you all the best. |

What about the weight? Did it take a while for your 57 day puppies to put on weight? I do think since they survived 2 and 1/2 days they have a good chance of surviving, but the lack of weight gain on the little girls part makes me VERY nervous. |

Mine weighted 3 oz at birth , they started to gained weight 2 days later . |
litter It is all guess work on my part...I have had a few bitches go over their due date...and decided on an exam..it did not bring on labor. The release of hormones starts contractions...although a bitch can abort a litter early, for many reasons, injury, infection, etc. If Bell had not have the green discharge, I would say it was possible the examine caused labor to start, but something was brewing. A tough call. I tube feed my puppies...but have used the bottle, don't care for a dropper.. Go by the amount guide as to the correct amount for weight per pup. Most pups start gaining at the second day...I have had some not gain anything for a week, then start to thrive..It sounds like the two are doing well for the early start they got...you have nothing to feel guilty about. Bell is a strong, healthy girl, not overbred or too old..these things happen to everyone if they do it along enough. I have had pups born at 1 oz. survive and pups born at 5 oz. die..there really is no predicting by size IMO...of course, the bigger an fatter ones give us less cause to worry. Becca and her sister were extremely tiny at birth and full term..both are over a year and well. PS..check her palate. |

Try putting the nipple on a syringe....that way you have more control how much you are feeding. I always worry and pray that my dams hold on to their pups at least until the 60th day. Not always but most of the time whelping before 58th day.....pups are somewhat premature and have difficulties and require supplemental feeding... |
I know her suction is good! She held onto that nipple on the bottle, so she is getting fluids. When she is on the teat, I squeeze bells teats to make sure she is getting something and I think her palate is good! What about other supplements? Any suggestions? |
I'm not a breeder, so I can't anything. But I did want to say congratulations and am praying both pups do really well for you. |
pup I would not give anythign my milk...I have used Nutra-Drops..Teri Shumsky used to tell me how good they were..and you only use a drop with a newborn twice a day... |
i agree with YorkieRose. the green was a sign the placenta had separated. that's what happened to my Silk and her first was deformed and dead but it died just before the section she had to have. i have had better luck feeding some of mine with a nipple on a syringe. good luck and congratulations on your new babies. |
The puppies are just gorgous....I saw them yesterday!! Karen, you are doing great. You are so loving and caring, I think they will be fine now!! |
