Questions about weight for you experienced breeders OK, this growth chart is kinda confusing me a little. The male puppy I am getting was 4oz even at birth which says 4lbs approx. as an adult. I know this is all approximate and nothing is written in stone, but now he is 5 weeks yesterday and weighs 2lbs 4oz. Which on the chart is more than 6 lbs since it stops at 24oz. His other two littermates are 2lbs even and 2lbs 1.4 oz. In your experience, would you say that they would be on the larger side or will they now slow down alot in size now that they are active? |
You can't go by the birth weight of the pup because the size of the litter and therefore the allotment of resources and space go into determining it. In my experience the pups will be bigger yorkies if they are that big at 5 weeks. It really depends on the line that they come from. Some lines, like mine, start out big as pups and slow down early. Example, Remi was 3lbs. 5 oz at 12 weeks and topped out at 5.5 lbs. Some grow steady, take a break and then growth spirt once you think they are done. It's all an estimate as they will be the size that they are meant to be. What size are the parents and grandparents, that should help you in determining the estimate. It should do a better job for you than the chart. Rule of thumb, double the 12 week size. |
Thanks for the imput Tami. Anyone else have any experience they want to share?:) |
I agree, double at 12 weeks. But again that is just a guess. In one litter about 18 months ago, Davie had 3 girls. All 3 were 4 oz. at birth and 2 lb 14 oz at 12 weeks. Today one is over 7 lbs, one is 4.5 pounds, and one is barely 4 pound and so full of energy that her forever Mom has lost weight keeping up with her. I love when I get updates from families I have sold to!!! |

size is no guarantee! my girl's weight is over the standard size...and her parents both were about 4 pounds...but she is as beautiful as can be! |
actually to give you an idea to back my thoughts are NO SIZE IS GUARANTEE is Twix (my sweet girl) was 0.7 lbs at 6 weeks old. she is now close to 8 pounds at a year old. |
When we bought Lexie we saw her Mom and Dad and they were both 4 to 5 pounds. She just leaped into our hearts and we love the 7 pound (when not pregnant as she is now) baby. She is so loving and cuddly that she could be 20 pounds and it would make no difference to me!! |
