Mom is hurting puppies Our yorkie gave birth to 3 puppies 12 days ago and last night she started to carry her puppies around. she carries them by their leg and they are yelping in pain. She won't quit. She is also leaving them alone more often. What can we do to disuade her from carrying the babies around, or how can we teach her the proper way to carry them? |
I Had The Same Problem My female Yorkie tried to carry her pups away many times. Several times I would find a pup cold and alone. She was trying to move them to a quieter , safer place away from everyone. I have a large family and I did not have a place to keep her completely away from all. I finally got a large square baby playpen and put a plastic underbed storage box that measured 18" x 36" in the playpen on one side. In the plastic box I wrapped a towel around a new heating pad on one side of the box and secured it with diaper pins underneath, the other side was also secured with diaper pins. The heating pad has to be the new ones that have intermittent heat and a very low setting. (a hot water bottle will work also) If Mom got too hot she could move to the other side. She could also jump out of the box and use a wee pad or eat and drink. She felt more secure and that worked for her. Good Luck! Be careful because young pups can get too cold away from Mom for a long time. |
Thanks for the advice. We are just stumped because they are in a warm quiet place away from everyone. She keeps bringing the puppies out to the main living areas and to everyone's bedrooms. She carries them by the foot and they are crying when she does this. Any ideas why she does this? |

Moving The Puppies Perhaps she is trying to get them under a bed. My female kept trying to put her puppies under the coach or bed. I think it goes back to the Den thing with dogs and she feels they are protected from danger. I have teenagers and we had to have visitors off limits for several weeks because that is when she would really try to hide them. The behavior changed when the puppies were about 6 weeks if I remember correctly. |
