breeding yorkies close to same size Hello to all and thanks in advance for replys. I have a 4 lb male yorkie and I am thinking of purchasing a 3 and half to four lb female. Would it be ok to breed them since they are so close in size? Rhonda |
Hi Ronda I would rather have the smaller male and larger female, its easier on the mommies. The same size is fine but I would search for 4.5-5lbs female adult weight for your little man. |
I usually use 3-4lbs males to 5-7 lbs females! lily |
I have always read that the males should be plenty smaller then the females, and is much safer to use larger females in size for breeding. I am not a breeder and of course not an expert, just advising what I have read. |
males I am not afraid to breed a bigger male to a smaller female..but the female needs to be at least 5 or more pounds. I have pulled out huge pups from small sires and tiny ones from the bigger boys..if all we had to do to get small birth size pups was use a tiny male, there would almost no sections. Charlotte (6 pounds) was bred to a 6 pounder and free whelped..the next time I used a my 3 pounder and she needed a section...one male was too big! Go figure..the bigger pup should have been in the first litter, but no one told him I guess. LOL |
You are looking for trouble breeding a female under 5 lbs. Especially under 4, all most a certain cecerian and could lose mom, pups or both. Try a sm male to a 5 lb female. |
I wouldn't breed a female that small. Too much risk for the female. Go for a larger female. |
