This forum is a wealth of knowledge....anyone have instructions on dews?

If you are talking about your own litter of pups, they are usually removed at 3-5 days of age. Find a local breeder who can show you I would never risk trying to explain it on a forum. If you don't have a local breeder to show you, contact your Vet clinic. The Vet will do them and/or show you how.

Well in general, I already saw a post on tail docking and I think it would be nice to know about the dew claw process....

There are a few who do them here and find it very easy to do. If you do a search, there are past threads about doing them, until someone pops in on your thread. I only do tails, I haven't done the dew claws yet so I couldn't help you, sorry.

Dewclaw removal is very difficult unless you know how and have seen it done. I was a vet tech and use to do this myself on my own pups in the past. You need someone to assist, since it should not be done by yourself. If you do not get enough of the dewclaw removed it can grow back and too much you can damage their paw/leg. I do not do them myself anymore, since I need reading glasses. Let your vet show you is the best way. The vet will also be able to cauterize them when s/he does each one. Very low amount if any blood then is lost. I use to use Quick-Stop when I removed them myself. Alum can also work, but takes a little longer to work and always add pressure if doing them yourself. And this is without saying always make sure to clean the area and sterilize your equipment first. But I would just pay the vet and have a safer feeling that it was done. :thumbup:

I agree with you, dew claws and tail docking is something that shouldn't be attempted without instruction and assisting on several. Not an easy endevor. If you aren't shown where the tail should be docked you can dock too short or too long. Incorrect removal of the dew claws may cause them to regrow.
