1st Time Breeding...
 

I have a friend who has a Yorkie also and she has been tryin to breed her Yorkie for years but has never found a yorkie "cute" enough until recently.My question is was it easy the first time breeding...she is looking at this like ts a piece of cake but I think its much more responsibilty than she is imaging...I love dogs and I am trying to get as much info to assist/stop her...any advice or pointers is greatly appreciated:)

Cute enough never heard of that one before..Not a good reason at all to breed your yorkie.
Health and background are so important.Has the male and female been tested for liver shunt etc???????
Males should be smaller than the females .
I would never breed my females to a male just because he is cute!!
So many other factors come into play when breeding toy dogs,has she researched breeding ,whelping and raising a litter and has she talked to her vet?

How old is the bitch? Has she ever been bred before?

Remember, testing for Liver Shunt only tells you if the dog you are testing does not have it, it does not tell you whether or not the dog is a carrier or not.

So, many factors go into breeding....testing eyes for Progessive Retinal Atrophy, Heart, x-raying legs for Leggs Perthes, checking for Luxating Patellas, ears tested, etc.

Healthy, good representation of the breed, within standard and with a good temperament and an excellent Pedigree.

You state that she has wanted to breed her female for years, how old is the female? If she hasn't been bred before the age of 3, it shouldn't be done.

Now that is only the beginning.....there are tests for Sexually Transmitted Diseases that need to be performed on the breeding dogs. Nutrition for the dam, possible whelping problems that may require emergency vetenarian intervention ($$$$$$). Countless of hours of taking care of mother and babies, no sleep for the breeder. Shots, training, socializing puppies, vet checks. Finding preapproved homes for those puppies to insure they won't end up in shelters (this should be done before the breeding ever takes place). Being prepared to take those puppies back if somehow the new owners don't want them. Being prepared to financially assit new owners with vet care should a pup have a genetic defect.....

Yes, you are right it's not easy and it is a great responsibility that shouldn't be entered into without a great deal of education and preparedness.

Thank You very much for your response...I asked her when she first talked about the boy dog who is very much smaller (i thought that wasn't good until now) did she know much about him and his owner and how was he healthy...she just replied she would want to see his health records...anywho, I just asked her about all the stuff you typed and she was speechless to the point our phone call ended...I love my Sasha dearly and i would never breed her because I could not take on that responsibilty and I feel the same is with her

Hopefully, you educated her enough that she'll really think hard about breeding. I don't want to discourage anyone from breeding, only let them know if they are going to do it to be prepared for the responsibility.

Her dog is 3yrs old...just the expenses that come with breeding the dog would be accessive for her right know...coming from me she doesn't want to hear it because she thinks I don't know what I am talking about but breeding is a major decision and committment

she needs to look at some of our post where many people come on here looking for help during the whelping. they are scared, crying, not knowing what to do and wishing they had never done this.
they have lost litters and even the mommies.
it is NOT a piece of cake. yorkies are very small.

Breeding toy dogs is not for the faint at heart you have to be prepared to loose your female and your pups and have big vet bills at times to go along with all the other things that can go wrong.You should never breed your pet unless you are willing to loose them.
Breeding them can bring joy and heartbreak at the same time.

There is a reason for breeding prior to the age of 3....a female's bones and organs are set and may encounter difficulty with her first litter.

Don't take offense of her not wanting to hear you. Alot of 1st time breeders only hear what they want to hear. They think you're jealous, don't want the competition, etc. It never enters their head that your concern is for the dogs.

You are so right on. And alot of them came on asking questions about breeding and members informed them of the responsibility. They did it anyway, came back on crying uncle....losing litters, dams with health issues, c-sections, eclampsia.....ets.

Right on, I am a breeder, and every whelp is different and if you do not know what you are doing it is not hard to lose a puppy, you don't just breed without checking all the above, otherwise you have no idea the problems you could be bring into the world!!!!!! Crazy, i hate it when people just get a little girl, and decides to have puppies, they think it is nothing to raise a litter, it is like having an infant child, you get no sleep for at least the first 2 to 3 weeks, then you can not go anywhere, as they could still be in danger, it's not just the puppies you also have to make sure you know everything that can happen to the mother. And Genetic defect's are soooooo important to know about before you even consider breeding. Their is a lot of research that needs to be done as well as Vet Checks, for both the male and female, this is what you call irresponsible breeding!!!!! It's done all the time, and problems sometimes do not show up for a year. I make sure i spay and neuter all my puppies before they are placed, so nothing like this can happen to them. It can be lifethreating for the mother!
