Concerned I am a little concerned for Gidgets 4 puppies. It was a long delivery first one at 1:36 A.M. the last at 7:04 A.M. No struggling, she did really well. Here is my concern. Birth weight Wed AM Wed PM Thurs AM ----4.4 -------4.1-------4.1--------3.9 ----4.8--------4.4-------4.4--------4.6 ----4.4--------4.2-------4.2--------4.1 ----5.1--------4.9-------5.1--------5.1 Gidget does have milk, they are nursing extremely well, no crying (like they are hungry) and their bellies do look full. Should I worry? They have their Vet appt. tomorrow morning for check-up, dew claws and tails. My other two litters with Emilee never lost weight after birth, so this is why I'm concerned. This is Gidget's first litter. |
Janet I would ask your vet first thing when you take them in. I haven't experienced puppies losing weight after birth, so I am not sure what advice to give here. It may be something like new human babies who lose a little the first day or two and then they start gaining. How often are they nursing? do you have anything there to supplement in between feedings to help them maybe gain more? I hope a more experienced breeder will pop on here and give you some advice! Goodluck hon! |
Thanks Alycia, They are nursing quite frequently, I have no worries there. And like I mentioned, I know they are getting milk, not only did I express some from Gidget, but their little bellies get round. Not as round as I feel they should, but still getting milk. I do have a supplement I can give (Esbilac), but wanted to wait to make sure they were getting enough of the colostrum (sp). I will wait till this evening to supplement (after I check their weights again), unless someone knowledgeable suggests I start earlier. Hopefully some others will see this post and offer their thoughts also. |
Well I understand the worry. We have one small female in our current litter that although she didn't lose, her belly never has got as full as I thought it should with nursing. I started giving her extra one on one nursing time with Mama and watching her closely. Her belly has been pretty full the last few feedings and she is keeping up with her litter mates development wise. |
Thanks again, I will probably start sooner than I thought, if for no other reason, my peace of mind, it won't hurt. They are really mobile, just not gaining as I feel they should. |
It is perfectly normal for them to drop weight in the first 24-36 hrs. They should begin gaining again shortly. |
janet, it is normal for them to show a weight loss the next day after birth. nine in ten do and also, they might show just a small loss after dewclaws are removed for a day because the vet says it might make their feet a little sore but that just lasts a few hours and then they are pushing strong again. |
i also think scales are hard to read when they are wiggling around. |
just a thought , I would not have tails and dew claws done on any puppy that has not started gaining weitght. I hope they get going soon. |
i was thinking about your babies, how are they doing? |
They are doing wonderful, thank you so much for asking. They had a weight gain Friday morning so I took them to the Vet. He checked them all over said they looked great and said it would be fine to do the dew claws and tails. He was right, they did great, not even a whimper when Mama got back in with them and they started nursing right away. They had a weight gain again today. I'm so relieved this part is over. Emilee's two litters never lost weight after they were born, so this kind of threw me just a little. Thanks everyone for all the advice, I will be posting pics in the nursery again real soon. |
That is great news, the first few days can be so scary. |
