What's your thoughts on this ???? I have a yorkie that I think is pregnant. I talked to her previous vet that is in the town that I use to live in. I told them about her and the first thing out of his mouth is " well you know she will have to have a c-section , because she is a small dog " This gave me a strange feeling about having him take care of her till she delivers.He is only 10 minutes away, But he sounds like all he wants to do is cut her open. I know that she is a small dog and it does happen, but her mom had 3 litters 6 puppies each and never had a c-section and neither did her grandma.(same owner for both mom and grandma) What is your thoughts. when your baby had puppies did She need a c-section or did she deliver o.k.. I am upset and confused..... Can you give me some input on this subject. i dont even know yet if she is pregnant, But for him to say well you know we will have to do a c-section upset me... how does he know>>> Guys I need your input. |

No my female is 5.9lbs she is very stocky and has strong muscle tone especially in her legs. she came from a litter of 6 and the breeders other litter that was born at the same time was 6, she had them all together when they were old enough to play. So Suki had to fend for herself and she is the boss in our house. I think she is a very strong female? what do you think. |
Although your vet should be on call in case of an emergency (this including a C section) Sounds as though your girl is large enough to deliver on her own. What exactly are his reasoning? How much did the male you bred her with weigh? If he was bigger than her the possiblility of very large pups comes into play. . . If it's just because she's a Yorkie; look in the breeder and nursery section. Most of those pups were delivered at home with no or very few complications. Good luck. |
Well she is big enough to breed, so I'm not sure why he would say she has to have a c-section. If your male used for studding is bigger this would be the only reason I can think of as to why he would say this so early. You don't even know for sure if shes prego or not from what I thought. I surely would look for a different vet, I wouldn't care to keep this one IMO. |
How big is the female?? How big is the Sire??? How big are there parents , grand parents ..etc. If there is a bigger dog in the dam or sire's lines she could have a throw back of a larger pup that could cause a problem. Any size dog may run in to a problem and need to have a C-section for many different reasons. Alot will also depend on the size of pelvis area. The only way to know if she could/might have a problem is with an X-Ray closer to her due date. They can see the size of the pups in relation to the size of the pelvis area. You will also know how many puppies to expect. He may think she will need a C-section if her hips/pelvis area is really small. If you are not comfortable with him, I think I'd be looking for a different Vet that deals more with breeders of small dogs. |
My male dog is just at 4lbs maybe 4.3lbs in both sides of the family of the dogs I think the largest dog is around 6lbs.both parents and both grandparents. none of them are very big and none of them had c-sections. I am going to find a better vet one that wont automatically think c-section. She is 5.6lbs and the father is 4.3lbs (and thats pushing it) do you think the babies are going to be big ? Thank you for your comments it really helps me alot. |

Thank you guys so so much it really helps to know that I have support from the yorkie family..... I am looking for a new vet today. I will see what they have to say about it after I find out if she is pregnant. I am glad you think the babies will be around the same as the family background. I dont want her to have any problems. she is not worth loosing. My babies means everything to me. Thanks guys I will let you know what the new vet says. |

I really appreciate all the thoughts and thanks guys, I have contacted a new vet in town and they seem to be very informative. She has an appointment in 1 1/2 weeks for her first visit with him. i will let you know the news..... Glad to have so many yorkie moms that care... again thanks guys... |
I'm glad that you found a new vet and I hope this one is much more breeder friendly. My vet only does c-sections as a last resort and will do everything she can to get them out without having to do one. You should also ask your vet for anything that they would suggest you have on hand for the delivery. Such as oxytocin. |
Here is some imformation I hope helps... Measuring pelvis area...the distance from the anus to vulva should measure a width of three man's fingers or about 2 1/2 inches... distance between the pelvic bones should measure two man's fingers, or about 1 1/2 inches wide.
