Help: Nursing Puppies! My Yorkie had 3 beautiful puppies 5 weeks ago. She was an excellent mom, but i have noticed that for the last week she has not been nursing her puppies very much. I was very concerned, so I would force her and she would nurse them but not for long. I had begun trying to wean them by giving them a mixture of goats milk, baby rice cereal and a/d puppy food, but they don't eat much. Is it normal after 5 weeks for the mother to stop nursing all together???? I have started supplementing with 2 feedings a day of goat's milk. Can anybody help shed some light on this situation??????? I'm not sure if I'm doing the right thing for these puppies????????? Thanks! |
its o.k. she is weaning them. 5 weeks is long, usually the breeders I talk to their mommy weans them at 4 weeks. the mother knows what she is doing. Keep feeding them, As long as they are eating they will be fine. My female is pregnant but not due for a while. i have asked several questions on this perfect yorkietalk forum and you will alway get help. I have read several replys about weaning and I have read all most all of them said 4 weeks the mother weaned them. A very good book to get to help you out is " the joy of breeding your own show dog" This book talks about breeding, welping, weaning the puppies, raising them till they are ready for their new home. also complete book of breeding by dan rice is great same info. If you look in the book it will explain around 4 weeks is the average weaning time. Mother knows best ! Good Luck |
