Help! Puppies wont eat! addy had 3 beautiful puppies last night but they wont eat off her! i have been squeezing milk into a syringe and feeding that way but they wont latch on to mommy. i have tried holding their face up to it, opening their mouths and putting them there....i have even squeezed a little milk out to entice them. what do i do? |
We had 4 with our 1st litter all latched on to Tiffanie except for Princess Isabella the 1st day after whelping. I had to bottle feed her and I kept putting her on Tiffanie and she took to it after a few days....Keep trying with them when U feed them from the bottle, let them take a few sucks then put them down to U're mommy and maybe they will get the hang of the sucking action. U must feed them tho or they will DIE on U. They have to have food, keep them there with her while U do the feeding, she needs to feed them or she may let U do it all and not even get intrested in feeding them so try to get her to do as much of it as U can. I don't know how often they eat tho more experienced breeders will come by and hopefully answer that, I just watched when our other 3 nursed and I nursed her, but I'd give her a few sucks and then let her try to suck from her. Also move them from breast to breast maybe some in the back or top aren't long enough for them to latch on to. I know Tiffanies by her bottom and shoulders are smaller and not hanging down like the ones in the middle of her belly. Also Isabella wasn't gaining as well as the others so this is why I also helped her. I wish U the best and please go get puppy milk from Vet. Call them too for their advise to U. Without Food and warmth they will pass away! Hugs Lee & Babies |
Have you tried putting their mouths on the nipples and squeezing the milk out so they get the idea that they are supposed to suck and will get milk. If you have to, get some Esbilac and syringe it slowley into their mouths. I would say to tube feed but if you dont know what you are doing, you could kill them easily. |
i have never had anything like that happen to me. i just wanted to wish you luck and congrat on the babies |
be careful with the syringe feeding, too. it is easy to push it a little too fast and get it into their lungs which will cause pnuemonia. Someone on here suggested wetting your finger with a little of your own salvia and rubbing it on the teat. then open the puppies mouth and shut it around it. i tried it once and it worked. |
Actually spit does work, don't ask me why. Keep trying it's very important that they get the colostrum. |
All good suggestions, sounds like your doing a good job yourself. With those nipples, I'd "prime the pump" and press them flat, enough to get in their mouths. Have some milk on them, or try the siliva sometimes. Definitely wanna get them latching on to mom. Be very careful syringing, hold them up (at an angle), not lying down( on the back). Allow them to drink a drop, then give another. See if they'll work at it also, maybe they'll get the hint. |
Feeding the puppy You can also put a nipple on the 1cc syringe, and the baby will suck while you just barley have to push the milk in to give them the idea and get them started to suck, i use the skinny Pointed Nipples, they seem to work a lot better for these little guys, you can even see the bubbles as they are sucking and it is so much easier on their tender little gums, it also builds up their sucking ability, so they can then nurse, it gives them the idea, and you can easily keep track of how much milk they are getting. If they weigh 3 oz. they need 3cc's every 6 hours or 4 times a day. I generally feed mine that way and put them back in with their mother, and if they nurse great, if not you syringe them again. Please let us know how you are doing! I do the feeding on schedule for at least 3 days, and make sure you stimulate them to go potty after each feeding. I use mineral oil and a cotton ball. Hope this has been helpful. Also weigh them each time to know how many cc's to give them. That is the least amount they can have, they will probably nurse also, but still keep them on the feeding schedule, till you know for sure they are strong enough to hold on to the nipple and suck the milk out. |
I was searching the forum, and saw this. How are the puppies doing now? it has been a while .... you are a good momma .... |
