Size of females
 
Hi, I am new here! I am a Mini Dachshund breeder of 5 years and want to get 4 Yorkies to breed. I just bought my male, he is an AKC Blue & Gold, 6 years old, and weighs 8 1/2 pounds. My question is what size is too small to breed with him? is 7 pounds to small? I did not want to get into breeding the small size Yorkies?

Your female needs to be bigger than the male. This will help insure a safe delivery for the female. There are breeders who do breed bigge males to little females but c-sections are a higher risk as well as death to either the pups or the mother. Even smal yorkies can have big babies, and vice versa. Good luck with your descision to breed.

The male should ALWAYS be smaller than the female. A friend of mine bred her 4 lb and 5 lb female with her 6 lb male. Her 4 pounder's second pup died. He was WAY TOO BIG. It took them over an hour of pulling and yanking to get him out. Her 5 pounder didn't have near the problems except after her water broke, she wouldn't push. They ended up having to do a c-section on her.

One of the biggest mistakes is to lock yourself into a male before getting your females. Your male is too large to be used as a stud if you want to breed within the standard..and what other reason is there if you love the traits of the breed. I have bred Doxies myself..wonderful breed.
I wasted 10 years, then got smart...find a couple tip top bitches and buy champion stud service..you will never regret starting on a solid foundation..have you ever heard the song.."a WISE MAN BUILDS HIS HOUSE UPON THE ROCK"? Well, it holds true for dog breeding also...best wishes

I know thats prolly not what you wanted to hear....Sorry.....Yorkierose is so right. Im a breeder, and I didnt start with a rock solid foundation and now Im gonna have to back pedal.....
A couple of my females are big 9 to 10 lbs and they dont always breed down with a small male either....take it from me bigger yorkies are harder to find homes for.
A smaller male would probably be in your best interest.

Yeah, I knew that is the case. I've been breeding Dachshunds for 5 years and I already knew the male is suppose to be smaller. The lady I got Gizmo from said he weighed 7 pounds, which would have been O.K., but when I got home and weighed him, he actually weighed 8 1/2. I can eye ball a Dachshund and tell you how much they weigh but the Yorkies are more harder for me to guess the weight because of all the hair. I will have to find another male to breed. :( You are so right, I got want I paid for. He is a GREAT dog and fits in good, but I can only have 3-4 Yorkies. 3 females and one male. I guess I will have to sell him. :mad:

We had a male for our girls and he got way to big... We had to find a smaller male... What a good pet he will be for someone but as far as breeding to my precious girls I didnt dare take a chance.... They mean to much to me to risk complications just because I wanted pups.. So, we finally found the perfect little guy and what a match.. It was kinda hard to get rid of a male that we had trained so well, but I look at it like we did his forever family a favor by all his training...

I'd have to agree. Your male is already too large (per breed standard, and breeding for anything other than breed standard is just ignorance) and that would mean your female would need to be 10-12lbs. Way too large.

I agree, I have Gizmo listed for sale locally. I've only had him a week and he is such a good dog. He's housebroke, friendly, calm natured, and listens really good. he acts better than Zoey, my new female. I will find him a new home where he can live indoors. He has always been an outside where he use to live, so I won't feel too bad for selling him if he goes to a nice inside home. I will be looking for a small male in the future.
