What tests to breeders perform....
 
on the dogs they are planning on breeding. I'm assuming they test for luxating patella, leggs-perthes, liver shunt? Any others? And how are each of these tests performed and at what age?

Well first you really need to know the dogs line health history going back atleast 4 generations. Then there are x-rays (leg perthes), vet exam (luxating patella), and blood work (liver shunt).

It has to be a very good x-ray to pick it up and then it will only show if it has been caused by injury. The vet will manipulate the dogs legs feeling the joints as he does so. he can tell in an in stant if it is slipping.

I didn't think liver shunt tests were very valid until 6 months - is that true?

i don't know about that but my vet refused to do one on Ceeby as a puppy because of the fasting and his small size. nine ounces at the time. i don't think they have to fast for the urine bile acid but I have heard it can show false postives and has to be done again anyway. i had him tested finally at eight month old.

Sugar's Mom - if you get a chance, check out this website bc the study claims more accuracy w/ urine tests, which would be so great bc it's non-fasting.

What are your thoughts?

i read a bunch of research about it because i did not want Ceeby fasted andd the answer I gave is what my vet recommended.

I asked my vet about testing my dogs for liver shunt and he has told me more than once that he doesnt think I need to do it. It seems to think the bile acid test isnt conclusive and would not prove whether they had liver shunt or not.

Well, I've been thinking about breeding my little one. And since she's only 16 weeks, I have some time to make my decisions. But if I do decide to, I want to be responsible and make sure she is tested for whatever might be a problem later on. My vet seemed to think that she "might feel a little movement in her left leg" so I'm worried about LP and the vet said we'd keep an eye on it but I'm thinking of trying to find a specialist so that I could be sure. As for the Leggs Perthe, at what age should they be tested for this?

I dont think you test for it unless your dog is showing signs of it, limping.
leg perthes is an adolecent disease, which means if your dog doesnt develope it within the first year, chances are your dog wont develope it at all.
The best thing to do is to really familiarize yourself with signs and symptoms of diseases. here is a good link to canine diseases.

A bile acid test will show if there's a problem in the liver...Then further testing has to be done to find out if it's a shunt, MVD, or another type of liver disease.
