Could someone please tell me..... for sure, what is the approiate age for a male to use for breeding. :animal36 I have heard many different stories and am unsure of the normal required "age" for a male to breed. NO I AM NOT GOING TO DO THIS,  IT'S JUST A QUESTION. I have a friend that asked me and I don't know the correct answer.:idontknow Thank you in advance. Suz |
For a litter to be registered with AKC, the male has to be at least 6 months old. |
i think it is 7 months but more than often, they are still too young to know what to do. most don't stud until 1 1/2 yrs of age. 7 months is still a puppy and all they want to do is play and not get down to business. also, their sperm may not have matured by this age. each yorkie is different but i do know for the most part, they will usually stud after a year of age. |
Thanks Lisa, you are so right! I was having a brain fart at the time. |
Thank you guys for not reading anything "into" this and going off on me. It's good to know that I can still post an honest question and not get bashed by it. :thumbs up :thumbs up :thumbs up Suz |

don't ever feel you will be bashed. i think most of it is we are writing and sometimes it sounds different than what we really mean or we are not clear enough. i think this is what gets everyone going. but sometimes it does get heated. |
I suppose when he learns to use the little thing. lol |
My vet told me the sperm is not mature until the male is a year old.... ;) |
"No dog or litter out of a dam under eight (8) months or over twelve (12) years of age at the time of mating, or by a sire under seven (7) months or over twelve (12) years of age at the time of mating, will be registered unless the application for registration shall be accompanied by an affidavit or evidence which shall prove the fact to the satisfaction of The American Kennel Club." |

I believe it is either 8 or 7 months, but I personally would wait until the dog is around 1.25-1.5 years of age to see how he matured and be sure to have all tests and evaluations completed to see if he is worthy of breeding. This is where showing your dogs is a great way to get evalutations. I would also only breed to my own dogs to see what he produced first. Anyone that on purpose breeds a pup under 1 year of age shows they do not know what they are doing or doesn't know or care about the breed. JMO Just thought I would add this for more information for you. I am glad you asked. Good job researching! :D T. |
