Considering Breeding.. Not sure if I should or not I have gotten my first yorkie and have considered breeding her. NOT now but in the future because she is only 8 months. I would love any opinions you would have. I have had experienced breeding with my pomeranian and I have been raised in a family of dog breeders. My mother showed and bred mastiffs and rhodesian ridgebacks for over 15 years. She is now retired but is still an amazing resource for me. My brother breeds and trains German Shorthair pointers. My little girl is just that TINY!! She currently weighs 3lb 2 oz. I do not want to breed her if she will be in danger. I have visited a couple stud dogs, all around her size, one is just under 3lbs. I would wait until at least until her second heat. IS she too small to breed?? Thank you for your help in advance:confused: |
Most reputable breeders do not breed girls under 5 pounds, it can be very dangerous for the girls. So you have some time to do more research and to see if in fact she will be big enough to breed and if she is of quality to be bred. Any time you breed you take a risk of loosing you girl , so think it over carefully. |
18 months, 5lbs is generally the rule. If she isn't 5lbs then I wouldn't breed her. :( The stud should definitely be smaller than her otherwise you risk complications! |
i am very sure she is too small to breed. most yorkies (like the post above) makes sure they are AT LEAST 5lbs. i bet she is adorable. lets see a picture of her. |
the girls give the same advice that I woulda. Make sure you do your research, and visit YT often ask Qs, Qs, Qs, and you will be lead on the right road. Good luck and keep us updated. My only strong advice would be dont breed her if she doesnt get to the 5 pd mark |
I am doing my research and the more I think about it, the less I think I am going to breed her. She will not be 5 lbs or even close to it. I dont need to breed her. I am going to visit a breeder a couple hours away from me to talk to her, mainly because I may get another female but to ask her what she thinks. I have about a year to decide since she is still a baby.. |
I don't think she is going to get big enough to breed, no matter what size the male is. It is just too hard on their little bodies, and the risk is just too great. I would look for a bigger one. My girl was 4 pounds 10 ounces and I was concerned the whole time. She had a litter of two and I'm glad there weren't any more. |
I think that you are doing the right thing reconsidering her for breeding if you dont think she will reach the 5 pound mark. I for 1 would say to you, dont give up wanting to breed if that is your dream. you sound to me as if you have your head screwed on. And I think that 1 day you will become a great breeder. After 2 years of extensive research, I myself became a breeder 10wks ago when my lil darling became a Missy became a mammy. Everyday is a learning curb to me, and I hope 1 day here in Ireland i can stop the lil yorkies flying outta breeders here like theres no tomorrow. |
I cant even image how hard it would to find homes for them!! OR maybe I should say finding a family you would be comfortable enough to take one of your babies!! I mean after at least 12 weeks of loving them and letting them go!!!! At least they only have a few!! Can you image letting go of 12 of them like some of the bigger breeds have!!!!::eek: |
Missy had 3 in her first litter. Little trixe had to be put to sleep after 4 wks. But we have lil betty and Jack left. I,ve kept betty for myself(shes in my Avater) and gave lil Jack to my best freind because i couldnt bear not seeing him again. What im saying is dont do it for the money, it actully cost me money, with the vet and stud fees, and i dont care, it was worth every penny. |
It can never be about the money!! My mom bred Mastiffs!!! I cant even tell you how many puppies I tubefed!!! If she didnt show, I dont think she would have done it! She then move to running a stray shelter. That is the best way to lose money!!! but it made her happy! |
2 Attachment(s) Here are some new pictures of her! I put them up under Photos to but I will put them here also |
