? about breedable puppy Question came up at lunch yesterday, if someone bought a puppy from you that you sold as a probable breedable/show quality puppy for full price, and the female developed faults that should not be reproduced: wrong coloring, bad knees, bad eyes, whatever; and your buyer told you she was spaying the girl at 9 months of age-- Would you refund the buyer the difference between pet and show quality even though buyer didn't ask for refund???? Would you pay for the spaying after proof it was done? Would you discount another female in a future litter? Remember the buyer has not asked for any reimbursement or replacement. This is an interesting question I thought. |
what do you mean by "full price" was there a lower price? |
probable breedable/show quality puppy says probable not told for sure but should be refunded the differance of pet/breeder quality and possibly 1/2 spay cost? |
I guess a pet sold is less expensive than a probable breeder/show quality is --how I understood the discussion. If this is the assumption, say a pet quality sells for $950 and a "probable" sells for $2000 (making up numbers we're having a discussion): What would you do if you were the breeder--remember the buyer isn't asking. You could do nothing--buyer isn't asking. Refund the difference minus half the cost of the spay. Offer a substantial discount on female in another litter. Or, your idea here. |
I'd give her some, if not all of the difference back. Like, if the difference was $1000 between pet/show quality, then I would pay back $500 or more. (so, at least 50%, if not more) Seems like the right thing to do. Doing nothing seems pretty lame, in my personal opinion. |
I'm not a breeder but, from what my breeder has said...A puppy that could be a possible breeder, of show quality, probably wouldn't be sold as a young puppy...They change so much up until adult hood that it's really hard to determine wether or not they would be good enough for show....this is only what I have been told...there are breeders here that could possibly answer your question |
Whenever I bought a puppy it was as a "potential" show/breeder. That's the chance I took whenever I bought a pup. I would never dream of asking for a refund or anything like that. Potential is just that - not a 100%. If you want a for sure you would need to buy an adult and thus the $$ would be even more. That's just my take on it though! |
I'm not in the show or breeder world but would hesitate to even believe someone would sell a puppy using the words 'show prospect'. From what I understand most show breeders hold on to those puppies & if they do sell them ..it's usually when they're a bit older. But if as a breeder, you (or whoever), knows in your heart that the buyer is due some compensation - I say for good business purposes...offer it. I hesitate to even say this because I notice many of your posts are directed towars certain people here so I want to clarify - this is ONLY an opinion....We all know it's not a perfect world and money is a big motivator in puppy sales.....it's a shame it isn't more about ethics. If it were - I don't think we'd be seeing so many sick little yorkies:( :( (not meaning this thread ...that was just a general statement) |
If a show dog was promised and paid for then that is what I would expect to get if it were me. Would I call and ask for a refund? NO, I probably wouldnt, but I would hope the breeder was ethical and had a good enough conscious to offer to make it right in some way. I kinda like the "do unto others" rule and I like to sleep good at night knowing I try to do the right thing if it is possible. Remember just because they dont come out and ask for it doesnt mean they wont spread the word about how they felt they were treated in the deal and that can be alot more damaging that offering to make it right in some way. |

If someone is looking for a show pup, I would not sell them one until the pup was 8 or 9 months old to insure that it was show quality. If I sell before, it is only as pet quality and the price for the pet is charged. It must be spayed/neutered, or I will take the dog back. I do not sell show potential, unless it is on a co-owner ship contract and then any decision would be a joint decision. Baron Quote:

If someone was looking for a show puppy , I wouldn't sell one until he or she is 8 months + . I always go to dogshows with the pup before selling to a showhome . This way , the pup have experience and its fair for the new owner . My pet puppies are already spayed or neutered when they go to their new homes , so it prevent the " accidents " . |

Check the contract and see what the agreement is between the breeder and the seller. Should clear up the matter! |
